Commercial mods: Sellouts or expanding the community?
Personally, I'm the yes and no type. If a mod was developed and made solely for the fun of it, I'd say sure: That's nice. Now, if that same mod was done so well or it became so popular (or both) and it was picked to become a commerial project, I'd be happy for the guy, and say that was good. After all, someone shouldn't turn down having their work published.

NOW, if a mod was developed SPECIFICALLY (sp?) to be released as a commercial project, or if a company made a mod convention (Like EA) just as a publicity stunt for their game, then THAT is selling out. What do you guys think?

What do you mean by "commercial mod"? You mean like the retail version of CounterStrike or are you including stuff like Jedi Knight 2, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, Star Trek Voyager Elite Force and the countless other games who use an engine developed by another company as their base and therefore can technically be called "commercial mods"?

Back on topic... :nervous:

User mods are different from expansion packs in that expansion packs often are made by the original designers with some fan submissions, include source code modifications, and are officially supported. Example: Silent Threat vs. a user made campaign with a few mods.

Anyway, what do you mean by "sellout?" Something that sells well or something that is a cheap marketing technique?

If you think a fasctist dicatorship was a communist nation then you have a badly warped perception of reality.

There has not really been any real communist nation in history so far; as wEvil said, the so-called "communist" nations were/are for the most part just controlled by power-hungry dictators. :p
