"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

I almost don't pity that fool :p
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

Cool. For once, I follow a link and it's actually funny, rather than a pathetically weak attempt at it.

That's really and truly evil. The worst part is, I have no doubt that it's true. I've seen people just that stupid (and worse) when they have to deal with computers.

I remember one, member of my family, she thought she needed screen savers, 'cos if the lights on the monitor weren't moving for too long, the monitor'd fall apart. I didn't wanna be mean, so I told her that that wasn't true, and she started correcting me, treating me like I was a moron for not knowing this.

So I told her to check and make sure that she chose the screen saver that was compatible with her monitor type. I think she's still looking. :D

I once altered someones desktop so there were no icons, no bar thingy, no buttons, no nothing, except a huge background saying "DUMBASS", a little scrolling marquee saying "You shouldn't have left your computer" and a script that disabled right-clicking, then I used the last remaining explorer window and DOS prompt to wipe a ton of the keyboard driver files.

Meh - you guys are all hard-core. Worst thing I ever did was to put a background "speaking clock" thingy on my parent's computer that read aloud the time every 15 minutes. But that was back in the Windows 3.1 days - 9 years ago or so.

Very true, but you needn't throw a fit about it.

Dunno about hard-core. I just dealt with a person who asked me for some information on a very basic thing, and then put on airs as if they understood the field more than me, and refused to take some good advice. They wanted bad advice, and I never dissapoint. Anyway, you should see the **** that happens at my school. All you have to do is provide the most superficial illusion that the computers have been hacked, and the computer-illiterate security nuts will do the damage for you. 'Cos, you know, hackers are EVERYWHERE, and they want nothing more than to STEAL YOUR REPORT ON FROGS!!!:D

People fear what they don't understand. This actually seems to apply more to computers than that old constant, death. Apparently, the logic is that, if you're an idiot, every person who can read a manual is out to get you, and can be foiled by systems so moronic they put the "child-proof" pill-bottle caps that everyone learns to open at age 3 to shame.

For some reason, everyone who can work a computer can also code flawless C, too, and can crank out their own GUI-based operating system in a couple hours.:D

Oh, and reads binary like it was a newspaper. How could I forget.:D
