For time now, people have been complaining about the price of good modeling/rendering programs. Well, Discreet also released a prog named GMax. It pretty much reminds the good ol' 3dsmax but has less features. Buuut, it's free... :D

Sorry to steal your thunder Ten but GMax is widely known about. You should read its limitations though. It is possible to export as quake2/3 format models and then convert to .3DS or .COB but you need a converter which you have to pay for.

I know about its limitations. (that's why I'm using the REAL max). Just some people here still haven't found a modeling program.

Yes, this is actually a new goal, assigned to "metal dices" team. Khm-khm, I am the leader of course. The borg corp. will be satisfied.

Anyway, glad I could help. Also I wonder why anyone haven't mentioned it here before.

Kabump.

Since about 3-4 days before this topic was sarted, I was experimenting with GMax, mainly for the puspose of getting a nice Merkava Mk. III into Renegade. :D But so as to not put the carrige before the horse, I've been going through the Discreet GMax tutorials available for download at the GMax site. They're quite well-done, but since I haven't gotten through them all yet, I can't say how comprehensive they are - it seems to be very comprehensive.

Anyway, I had next to zero knowledge of 3DS MAX prior to diving into GMax, but I've learned a ton. I highly recommend downloadign it and the tutorials, help files, etc - just so you can become familiar with the modelling method and interface used in the world's most commonly-used and best pro package, 3DS MAX.

Unfortunately, it can't export into any file format that anything else can read. So basically, if you wanna learn 3DS MAX (like me), but prefer learning via well-done tutorials (like me), then get GMax and start learning!

It also will help in future game MODding, as pretty much everyone's jumping on the bandwagon. ;)

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Right.  It's good to start with GMax cuz the real Max is what I call difficult.

nah. If you know what a one or other function does, then it's all down to creativity. Like maths.

I recommend the tab panel for MAX. It makes life a bit easier. Just too bad it isn't enabled by default.

Does anyone know if there is a free program that can open max files?

Uh... GMAX is it. .3ds is used by most modeling software as a sort of standard, but .max format is proprietary.

heh, been meaning to give it a try for a while now since I've been using MAX 2.5 for years.

Meh. I ask you- if it's nicish, free software, and it's legal to own, then what's the point? Takes all the fun right out of it- never mind that you KNOW there's a catch in there. In this case, making the catch obvious aggravates the situation.

Hell, if it was a functional modeler and still was free, I'd go download the illicit warez version just on the principle of the thing.
