Here's one:

This can happen quite frequently, as often as, say, once in a minute. At other times, the rate of occurrence may step up until in a single moment it can happen twice, almost back to back! And yet, it never happens in the course of a hundred thousand years.

is the answer:         "to get a good idea"

Weapons control, we have a target!  Warm up the Welcome Beam.... and FIRE!

It is good to have you here, lonelybabe.  Flamethrowers are located beneath the seat infront of you, the seatbelts don't work, in case of emergency, exits are to either side and at the rear, and if you see any Shivans crawling in the ductwork, its probably just Carl.

Anyway, nope, people get good ideas all the time.  They certainly have had them within the past hundred thousand years.  Guess again! :)

...And if someone is sitting in the front row they stay unarmed?? Heck, no! Your flamethrower is under your own seat! :p

And since when did this thing come with seatbelts??

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

"Exits to either side and at the rear," "In case of emergency, your life jacket is located under the seat in front of you," etc., are components of the speach they give you before takeoff on an airplane.  I always assumed that that's what we were mocking/deriving our stuff from; it would never have occurred to me to think otherwise, it seemed so obvious (to me, at any rate).

Fine with me. You stand way over there with your lightsaber in-hand, and I'll stand over here with my flamethrower. Now we'll both attack each other, and see who wins. :D

I knew there was a reason Lucas never had flamethrowers against Jedi in SW movies... it'd look bad. :p

Sesq: Meh, now I feel stupid. :p

It was doomed to death after that huge discussion about observational physics.  Start a new thread. :)

The answer has to fulfill all the stipulations of the riddle, not just one.

But still, you make a very funny point.

Whoops, so it was.  Lines got crossed there; sorry.

I was thinking of the fact that it took so long for people to guess the microwave thing, and there was a general :doubt:  feeling when the answer was revealed, that people probably wouldn't want to keep checking up on the thread.  Somehow I associated that with the glass half-full thread.

I meant to say that it appeared people were :blah: about this thread, so it might be a good idea to start a new one and get some new interest.

I said sneezing the first time because you said originally "not in a hundred thousand years ahd it ever been recorded" or sometihng ot that effect..

hmm my next guess is the birth of a star(s) ? like completly being born, not just forming.

Hmm, you must have posted that while I was re-editing to correct my misquote of the riddle.  I guess "sneezing" could have been true of my original mis-wording; I'll dig a second cookie out of the bag, and you can have half.  But anyway...

Nope, it's not the birth of stars, either.  Remember, it not that the answer hasn't happened in the last hundred thousand years (which stars have probably be born in, anyway), but that it never happens in the course of a hundred thousand years.
