Is Hard Light Productions a licensed and copyrighted name?  I mean, with the whole source code project and everything, shouldn't it be?

...or is it already and i just don't know about it

Why? Everything here is free, except for the stuff Volition owns, innit?

Intellectual property. It doesn't really need copyrighting.

I'm sure some big, faceless corporation's gonna go to some huge effort to find this place and steal our ideas, but still- so? Either you're just making them for your entertainment, and that of fellow HLPers, or you can market the bleeding things anyway. And come up with new ideas.

Well, as far as I can tell (from a google search) we are the only "Hard Light Productions" on the internet and I have not heard of any such name in real life. Although Stryke is probably right in that the possibility exists of some stupid corporation using the name and then bug us about it, but there is no need to bothering copyrighting this unless it is free.

It's unlikely THEY'D bother US about it, since first off we're pretty damn obscure (does HLP even appear on search engine lists?), and second off there are many people who know that we had the name first.

Usually unless they are in direct competition....name crossovers isn't a big issue I think.

It is a big deal. Just how important is it to you? Not that there will ever be an issue in the future, but it is a possibility...
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !

then we can have t-shirts and stuff... i'd be proud to wear a "hard Light Productions" hat or something!

I don't know if we'll have a problem with big corporations coming in here and messing with us, because first they would have to find out if the material/name is copyrighted (else if the material/name is copyrighted they would be in a big lawsuit), and if they ask, the admins can say 'yes' and it would be no big deal and they would have to find some other name.

you realize it's not very hard at all to see if a name is registered/copyrighted at all!  and if the admins say 'yes' and lie, then they can be taken to court, and i'm sure we wouldn't want that to happen.

i'm not saying register it because some big corporation is going to want to buy it or something!  but in the future it might be a good idea to consider it

Can't necessarily be taken to court, because nobody really owns the name and therefore, if they say yes, it wouldn't hurt HLP or anything. They can get their own names.
