Ok. Here is what I got. On one of the Jedi Knight 2 servers, one player often claims that he has an IP tracer and that he can upload files (viruses and backdoors) on my PC while I am playing. He is often being a jerk (he is not the server admin) and everyone hates him. My question is. Is it possible to trace someone's IP on-line while playing, without being an admin? I don't have a clue about this IP stuff, so I need an experts answer. Is this guy just talking **** or is this really serious buisness?

I'm no expert but that kind of thing is probably possible if you know how. Although if I was you I'd ask this question on a JK2 forum, since they know a lot more about the structure of the game.

In the meantime, fit a firewall of some sort - Zonealarm is good and free though there are probably other more advanced firewalls out there at a price.

Whatever happens - don't take any chances if he's as much of a dick as you say.

Meh, with WinXP's built-in firewall, I am invincible! INVINCIBLE!

Wait... what the hell? The lights on my modem are flashing - I'm being hacked! Good God!

There's probably some crappy-ass program out there that'll sniff through a specific match/game/set on the servers and sniff IP's. Not sure what kinda security crap JK2 has, but online games are usually pretty friggin easy to IP sniff on. But someone having your IP isn't that dangerous in itself. And there's probably some way to script a virus into some custom textures or map that'll get sucked inta yer computer when it downloads all the players custom skins and such. But then all online games have such problems.

Just keep updating JK2 and try to play on pure servers.

Thanks for the tips people. I am using Norton Internet security so I have a firewall, and the server is pure. Anyway, I reported that idiot to the admin not just for *****ing but for chat killing and other stuff. I hope they will do something about it.

Unless they've changed it HUGELY, that's not a firewall, no matter what bull**** Microsoft has told you. Its port level filtering and has been in every release of the NT OS since 4.0.  It'll prevent traffic on an unauthorised port, but it certainly won't do much with it.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]
