Intro movie Orion: a possible solution?
At the risk of turning this into yet another FS2 intro Orion debate, upon watching the movie for some two hundredth time, I saw something that I had not noticed before. Just after the Medusa is destroyed and the camera cuts back behind them, you can see the other side of the Orion for about half a second. Here is what it reveals:

The nameplate text is quite unreadable, but the only ships in the game with the nametags were the Galatea and the Bastion, so it must be one of those. (although then again, there is the Galatea in the Colossus movie :p) I could be wrong here, but I think that the Bastion was in a different system at this time, so that only leaves one choice.

I suspect the only reason that nobody noticed this before is that the viewer's attention is probably focused on the Medusas and the Dragons, which is where all the action is at the time.

Anyway, any thoughts on this?

Wait wha? What Do you want? I thought we already thought it was the Galatea? Oh wait.. no..   Comm place..

Yeah, but just because they were the only ships with tags doesn't mean they were the only ships with tags. I think V just did it because they were your home ships.

Props for noticing this though. However little it affects an old arguement, I still never saw it there before :D

The other logical explantion is that the Galatea and Bastion were the only Orions in FS. All Orions would have there name on that plate. It doesn't happen in FS2 because of the greater number of Orions present would take up to much room in the ships.tbl.

And secondly, according to V, who really should know what they're talking about, the Orion in the FS2 intro is called the Legion or something like this. It was not the Galatea.

True, now that that is brought to mind, Those are the only two Orions we see with our eyes in game, so who's to say they don't all have nameplates?

It bugs me that there is this much confusion over a published game..

Or....

There are more than just the Galatea and Bastion. Ex: Amadeus, Minnow, Intrepid.

I'm assuming the GTA had all destroyers with nameplates. Dunno why; it prolly just looks cool ;).

That could be any ship.... not just the Galatea or Bastion.

Heck... its just an intro... and a rather screwy one at that (lets not get started on that).

I guess you're right there, but I doubt that V would go to the trouble of making a new nameplate just for that movie; the Galatea in the Colossus cutscene shows that little thought was given to these really small things.

Considering that the Colossus cutscene also uses the Galatea, it is likely that whoever made the FS2 movies (V hired some other company to do them) did not fully know of the story differences between the three Orions (normal, Galatea, Bastion) and they thus just used any one of them.

I guess as far as the story goes it must be the Legion, since V's word is basically final for our purposes, but the question now arises what actual model was used when making that movie.

Guys, the simple fact is that the Orion in the intro HAS NO NAME!  It's not the Galatea, not the Legion, not anything.  It's just a random Orion used for the dramatic intro of the game to show exactly how screwed the GTA was in the first game.  NOTHING MORE!

Volition never said it was the Legion, they said you could call it the Legion when someone asked if he could call it that FOR A CAMPAIGN.  They never had a real name for it, never a real definition.  It's just a random Orion.

Fact: The Orion that participated in the battle depicted in the FS2 intro is the Legion.  That's the word we have from :v:, whether it was a concession for a fan game or their own idea.  And Eishtmo, you even implied it was the Legion in your FS1 fanfic. :p

Whether or not the nameplate actually says GTD Legion is another story entirely. :) I noticed this in the cutscene a few months ago, when I was scrutinizing the intro to see if we saw the Orion from another angle.  I took a screenshot and fiddled around with it in Photoshop, but I was unable to read the text.

I am almost prepared to bet that the actual model is the Galatea one, seeing what we have in the Colossus cutscene... :D

Grr.  This was solved a long time ago.  Adam Pletcher...you know...the guy who created the whole thing said it was the GTD Legion.  That is the end of the story.

They aint going to make a whole new nameplate texture for a freaking frame in a movie scene.  Realism here. :D

why not?

Intro movie Orion: a possible solution?
Because you only see that nameplate for a few seconds and you can't read it anyway. I Orion used could also be the Bastion model (obousely not the acual Bastion) used latter on.

If I have to...I will make a signature that parades the 10 truths about FreeSpace or something :D

Maybe kill a few discussiosn here and on the VWBB about stuff that was asked, solved, years and years and years ago...and I know most of you are newer to the community than that....but these topics just keep coming up...and its funny to debate an issue that has only one possible, confirmed, solution.

Still...its not worth blowing a braincell on or anything either.

SO....everyone, lets sit down, have some beer, and chillax.
