Yeah, I heard about this last night. Apparently they're only releasing it to certain governments and various agencies so they can improve security, but it'll get out instantly anyway.

They'll probably try and sue everyone who brings out patches for Windows.

*goes to check*
ok... so lots of people are unhappy with the new licensing plans (understandable), so microsoft decides to release almost all source code so governments etc. doesn't switch over to linux.

:wtf: Would this be for the latest version (XP/2000/etc.) or some older versions? Somehow this does not really sound like MS to me...

If they are trying to fight Linux, does it mean that they are going open-source or something?

MS get free improvements made by governments, and sell it on as Windows XXP or XP+ or (special internet edition) XXXP or (Castlemaine editon) XXXXP.....

EDIT - and I wrote that without even reading the link Maeg posted......

I know for a afact that several UK councils have at the very least researched replacing Windows & Office with Linux & StarOffice to save on the costs.

which is one of the reasons they're doing this (another reason is that swedish government started to think about researching the possibilities of an open source alternative). Their new licensing is teh bad. And kind of uncomprehensible too.

[color=66ff00]Somebody steals the code, gives it to one of the WINE guys, WINE becomes 100% compatible with all windows software overnight.
Linux becomes number one choice for the 'my operating system actually works and runs almost all software' enthusiast... ;)

For a second I thought lances would fall tommorow...

but it ends up it's just another screwy, half-rotten scheme from Microsoft.

there's another not-so-rosy side to it.

The current way M$ are handling copy protection through the proposed palladium platform is bad enough - wtf is going to happen when govornments start writing law enforcement patches into software for regional versions?

Compatibility will go down the pan!

That might not be much of an option... It will depend on Microsoft mean by "strictly opt-in." As I understand it, programs require digital signatures before they'll run on Palladium-enabled hardware which will make it quite difficult (but not impossible, MS can't make attempting to eradicate open source software too obvious) for open source programs to run.
