You don't even have to burn a copy. Just install it and download fs2_open. I lost all my CDs, but I can still play.

Well yeah, but what about all the artwork, models, voice etc? There's more to Freespace than just the executable.

But if you install it then you already have the voice, etc. on your HD... Although, when you send the CD's back you won't be able to view the cutscenes.

If you did own a copy there would be very little reason for you to rent it except in the case of having a scratched CD. Renting a game you don't own to burn a copy is illegal.
