Okay, I have heard that traditional multi-part turrets do not work on vertical faces.  Sometihng to do with the hard coded section of the game.

So, the 'base' of the turret must rotate about the y-axis, and the barrels about the x-axis or z-axis(correct?).....

Is there a brave modeller out there willing to try this idea....

Make a turret SPONSON.;)

Two horzontial plates, verticaly seperated.  These are part of the hull.  A section connects the two.  This forms the turret 'base'.  Finally, the turret barrel(s) are added.

(roughly) Like this:

\\\\\\\|-------------------
\\\\\\\|-------------------
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|...........|--------------------|
\\\\\\\|...........|--------------------|-----------------------
\\\\\\\|...........|--------------------|-----------------------
\\\\\\\|...........|--------------------|
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|.................|,,,|
\\\\\\\|-------------------
\\\\\\\|-------------------
(Ignore the region filled with dots...:mad2: )

The base still rotated about the y-axis, and the barrels.....

So, anyone what to try this idea?:nervous:

I don't think that turret would work quite right as explained. You forgot one thing that I'm told (but haven't tested yet) is needed for multi-part turrets to work right. By default they have to point straight up. If that side turret works the way I think it does, it can't point straight up. (And it looks like it would only turn to it's sides, not up and down.) That said, I am getting an idea on how a side multi-part turret could work, but the field of view might be tricky so the turret might try firing through the hull. It would be what I call an "arm" turret, rather then a standard turret. I'll have to model one and test it out. I had tried an earlier experiment with turrets and found out something interesting: The axis that each submodel rotates on would appear to be hardcoded. The settings you chose in a POF editor would appear to be ignored in game, though they're useful to try and get an idea how a turret will rotate.

Well, the idea was that where the turret 'barrels' join the 'base' would be a pivot point for the barrels, but i get what you mean.

Using 'standard' multi-part turrets out on pylons is just really messy.  Turrets like this would shoot through the hull at a target on the oppostie side, even missiles go through(:wtf: ).  I'm sorry, but Aldo's models are the worst for doing this, or are the ones where it is the most noticeable (the griffon is the worst I've seen yet).  Great models, but this little flaw is really bad........

BOT, I did have second thoughts as I posted about this idea, but I felt that it is a case of 'Never know till you try!'

BTW, some of V's 2nd gen terran ships have turret barrels that are not vertical.  their like 30 degrees off, and so are damm hard to turret properly...

I look like to see this test of yours.  Sounds, intresting ..............

To be fair, the Gryphon is an ancient ship, anyways.  I don't think any of the new ones do it, with the possibly exception of the (old version) Orc.  In fact, I only used pylon turrets on 2 ships i can think of - the Gryphon and Orc.  so I'm not sure which ships you mean.

My initial experiments haven't worked quite right, I haven't gotten the turret to face the right direction when it's firing, though I did see that the FOV can be set right. The trick is getting it facing right while keeping it from going somewhere it can't. (Like swinging the turret through the side of the ship.)

*has an odd idea*

Ever tried building a turret backwards?  Like making the barrels the parent and the turret base the subobject?

It was the Gryphon's missile launcher turrets.  I actually use the Orc at the moment, and the amount that the plyon turrets fire through is small.  It only really happens with targets that are at about 175 degrees from the turrets normal.

It also depends on the weapons mounted.  Slow firing Flak guns don't show that much, but pulse  turrets, missiles and fast firing flak are quite noticeable.

Don't get me wrong, ALL your models are great (well, I didn't like the Gryphon, but thats just personal taste).  I needed an good example, and yours was the first I could think of...
