Monitor Cable Problems... Help!
As the title says really... my monitor now only shows the color red over everything, the problem is in the cable since pulling the cable up vertically hard causes the problem to cease - however I can't hold it in place and use it at the same time... a solution is needed, is it possible to completely replace monitor cables? (as far as I know they're kinda built into them so it looks like a specialist job...) Cheers guys!

Use duct tape. Or kill yourself, that's always a way out.

:D

Now really, don't try to replace the cable yourself. Just take the damn thing to a technician, it seems like quite a simple problem to me.

Mine won't be - it's second hand from an old friend - I've had it for a good 5+ years now.

Come on, the best permanent solutions are always the ones involving duct tape.

Hmm.... so it would seem! That said I've spent the day installing my stuff in a swanky new Antec Plusview 1000 AMG case, it's *****in' However the monitor problem remains... does anyone know of any way at all to sort it other than duct tape? And I'm talking new cables here :)

If you know your way around electronics, just power down the moniter and open it up. You either have a worn wire within the main cable or one of the connectors has worked it's way loose. The hard part will be finding the problem, the fix depending on the location of the flaw is fairly easy.

Plus you CAN purchase a replacement cable,...just depending on the moniter as to just how simple or a complete pain in the ass it will be to replace.
Example my old moniter the cable hit a breakout box where it entered the moniter housing, then twisted through the housing using up TEN freaking feet of wire and connected at varies locations.

heh that's why now I buy my moniters at the county surplus sales,.....$10 for a 17 inch moniter that's less than a year old :D I break a wire just toss the POS and get a new one ;)

The cable's probably for ****. If the problem's at the computer end of the cable, try screwing it in better, checking the pins, etc.- this happens relatively commonly (I get it occasionally, due to the fact that my monitor cable's hanging about an inch above the ground where people like to put their feet.), but all it takes is a little common sense to fix

If the problem's at the monitor end, you probably pulled a couple wires loose already inside the monitor, and you're gonna have to take a screwdriver to the casing to fix anything. Duct tape is not a solution, you'll probably end up yanking out the rest of the wires.

This happened to mine, except I lost red and it only showed blue. I ended up buying a new cable. What probably happened is one of the pins broke.

It's not that - I mean I get the impression the pins are intact - because I've now ghetto fixed the problem by pushing the computer slightly closer to the wall it's infront of - the cable is held up in place without wire or tape (thank god) however letting it drop back down causes it to go back to just showing red... I'll drop by my local hardware store and see if they stock spare cables (I doubt they're much different from one model to the next really). I'd rather not spend to much time/hassle on this thing if I can help it.

I'd still check those pins. If it's just the slightest bit unsitted the "Ghetto" method will work,..but the problem will only get worse. And it'll suck that much more when you pay for a cable ,..open it up to replace it and find out the cable wasnt the problem.

If you set it screen down in a chair you should,....SHOULD,...find about 4-6 holes going from 1 - 3 inches deep before getting to the screw itself, which is half the pain if you don't have a line thin Phillips laying around.  Most of the time the majority will be on the back of the screen itself right about where it narrows down from the Cath. Tube into the main compartment.

As for replacing the cable....could be easy,...but could be rough...no way of knowing until you get into it. Also do yourself a favor and look up the make/model online. IIRC when I looked into replaced a cable on my old moniter, it was like $30 for the damned thing.

So no duct tape.... Electrical tape?  Its just as useful: you can use it for everything from holding on a medical dressing, to keeping up you football socks. Plus it comes in prettier colours than duct tape.

:nervous: Err, i mean, get a new cable like the other folk said.

Been there saw that, fixed that.

Look this might be the problem. The pins on the end of the cable that get inside the monitor graphix slot may be dammaged. Maybe one of them is even bent so you have to put it back into her previous state. Just be carefull not to twist it back too hard or else you will be stuck with seeing red on it for the rest of your life (or for some time)
