After a bit of BF1942 playing I got to thinking (like you do) about the attitude of hotshot pilots...

That is, people who are good at what they do - in this case - flying. Many say the "hotshot attitude" is a bad thing, that it brings out a poor arrogance in people. But is that true? Considering the level of skill and control needed to successfully do what a hotshot pilot does, perhaps arrogance is a small price to pay....

if you're good, then i guess brag you're good...

then while you're bragging, some "n00b" who's never been seen before will step forward, challenging you... everyone will take your back, and laugh and mock that n00b, but when they do dogfight, the n00b kicks the arrogant bastard's ass... there's always someone better.

In real fighter pilots, a certain arrogance is entitled to those who can legitimately claim to be the best of the best.  However, that is only when it is a real skill that really matters.  "Fighter jocks," those who are good at flying a particular sim in the fantasy world of gaming, are not entitled to any such bragging rights, because when it comes down to it there is nothing to be gained from their "skill".  Sure, they can claim to be amazing all they like, but with no real implications for their skill it will inevitably step on the toes of more than a few people, and it just seems asinine.

And besides, I'd love to see how most of these self proclaimed hotshots would fare if subjected to the inertial stresses of the maneuvers that they pull off.

i'd like to see anyone how they fare when it comes to real life physics, inertia, etc.  that's not a good reason.

if someone's good at Counterstrike, for example, and they brag about it... they brag they're good at the game, they don't brag that in real life they could pull all the manuevers in the game (i.e. shoot 150 terrorists, carry 14 guns and over 50,000 ammunition, etc.)

Fighter pilots have to.  That's why they can take that attitude.  But that really wasn't my point.  It just seems really stupid to me to go bragging about how well you can play a game, especially a computer game, to people you will never meet.  My attitude toward the braggerts has always been "get a life."

There is nothing to be gained from their arrogance though, even if they are exceptional "pilots" in a particular game.  If Earth was engulfed by an EMP wave right now, then what would they have to show for it?  Nothing at all.

What Stratt said. Arrogance is usually only acceptable by my standards if they earned the right and I've seen it myself. Yet it must be something in real life.

Having some moron come to you with "I can kick your ass at Starcraft/XWA" or whatever game is just annoying and ghey. It's a damn game and it serves no purpose in real life. The only time a game like that should be bragged about is if you are playing a friend for money or summat.


Its more a personality/character issue.

actually, for the record, anyone who claims to know how to play starcraft, and doesn't, is a n00b...
a few months ago i played this n00b (many of you probably know him, i still have the replay), and he was zerg and i was protoss.  After about an hour and a half, i had 3 expansions, and was maxed out an hour ago, with full upgrades on every unit... i attacked my 'friend', and he had one hatchery, a spawning pool, a few other buildings, about 10 unupgraded zerglings, and a mutalisk.  oh, and a queen, with no upgrades on it (all it could do was infest CCs)...

anyone who plays starcraft will know what a n00b this is.  so to conclude:  people who claim they know how to play a game, but actually don't, are n00bs too.

The fighter pilot arrogance was wanted during the cold war.  They really taught and led them towards it.  Think about it, if your kill ratio HAS to be 12:1 to break even, a bit of confidence could help.

nah, it's spring, so do some math, just like in any other season.

Anyway, it really depends on what is being boasted about. If these top players brag about their prowess at the game only and behave normally otherwise it is fine with me, as I suppose they do have something to be proud of there. However, this is very rare in the computer game world (bragging about gameplay but restricting it to that). For example, on the VBB squadwar forum, it was almost always a given that whenever a top-class player got into a fight, he would carry an air or superiority in all his posts when the argument had nothing to do with who was better; I have seen countless instances of something like "you think my squad hacked your website? then come duel me, I'll beat you up." Like that has anything to do with the issue at hand.

The line between confidence & arrogance is pretty thin.  Once you get arrogant, you start to make mistakes.

NB:  Venom - it's about 1 degree and raining outside.  I think I'll try and stay indoors, especially after todays exertions.

I always thought that was funny as hell. Like dueling in a GAME online would actually solve an arguement

Now of the actually respected hotshots, you could tell they knew they were good, but they didn't rub it in anyone's face either. Like Etherial Entity, Merlin-7, and countless others I've sadly forgetten the names of over time.

A true "Topgun" that had some respect could sit in the chat listening to some newbie talk trash about whipping his butt, then fly vs him, and afterwards tell the guy how to improve his game enough that he COULD whip his butt next time.

The line between self confidence and arrogance is thin and blurry, so I'm just arrogant. Besides, I'm usually justified - people on public servers in BF 1942 suck
