Wanted Cheap: Windows XP Pro
The title says it all, I want to upgrade to XP Pro (Home won't really do), however I don't want to spend much doing it. I do however want a legit copy of the software - before anyone goes down that road. And I also understand that what I want might just not be possible - but where is the cheapest you've seen XP Pro?

Cheers guys :)

Bout all you'll find that's not the same price, every software dealer I know keeps Windows (98, XP, 2k whatever) at the price set by MS. Hell 98 is still like $100 for the upgrade version.

dude, XP, u need to have an original no matter what. when you go to activate it, u have to call microsoft to do it, using the serial number given. if u do that its going to conflict with the copy of XP whoever gave it to you. the serial is going to be the same as the copy and they wont activate it for you. u better off getting a hot version/copy, then using the cracks provided by it.

or spend the money to get it.

unfortuantly microsoft made sure XP and up isnt easy to double by friend2friend means.

I don't think he was talking about a legit copy here.

deep eyes: The beta copy of XP was available months before the market version was released, and has none of that security silliness. Later versions have bypassed the security system completely, and a Google search will yield a few dozen different versions.

I do mean legit - that is to say legal. The reason? I don't want to **** around with getting out of a tight spot if things go awry - that is to say I have system problems. If it's really safe to copy the CD and make sure I can activate it then please PM me and we'll discuss it away from the forums (I may not like warez here in public, but since there's more confidentiallity to PMs/email... thats another matter).

Windows XP Pro Corporate Edition is the only way to go (if you're dead-set on submitting yourself to XP). No activation. Nein. Nada. Nyet.

The University store that I work in sells a Student License for about $130 (Cdn) for WinXP Pro.  Its just the CD and a number but hey thats good enough.  If your a student, you probably can find it available...I would think.

funny thing is, HOME is Proffesional, with alot of features disabled, which there are ways to enable but its coded more around a lossy ME style codebase (someone told me).

Well I thought it must be something like that, more secure or something, but I have friends with both and I honestly can't tell the difference (except the loading bar at startup on one is green and on the other is blue).

I'd just be more comfortable with the pro edition, I want those extra features and from what I gather it's automatically configured to not have an opinion on everything you do (unlike home which tries to "help" the user).

So, the XP Pro Corporate software... where and how much? If indeed there's no activation at all I'm guessing it can be copied easily enough but as I've said before - keep that in a private place.

Exactly, I like 98s control over the majority of what goes on - even if I have to spend time looking up what option to pick to make sure it's the right one, I have a better idea of what I want out of my software than Windows XP Home might think - and I've seen it make poor choices that took time to repair on a friends computer that - had he had access to the options - could've been avoided.

*pities Kalfireth*

XP Home clean install running on a Celeron (2nd gen, not the lousy 1st gen) 500Mhz / 128mb RAM = laggy OS. Yes, regular explorer windows were actually laggy.

2000 Pro running on PII-200Mhz (laptop, I might add) / 96mb RAM = smooth as silk.

Honestly, dual-booting 2k (work stability) and 98/98SE (games & performance) is, IMHO, far better than XP. That's what I do.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
