Ship naming convention
[color=66ff00]
A point of much friction seems to be someone stealing another persons ship name. I personally don't see a problem with this as it's a little silly to argue that someone can't use a name because it's already in use in a totally unrelated campaign.

I propose that anyone can use any name that they wish in a non canon campaign or mod. Obviously it would be silly to just use all of [V]'s existing names or something like the 'Raynor' which is a well known project. Any other names would be free to use.
Lets face it, there are only a certain number of egyptian names etc. that you can use unless you're hell bent on naming your ship after the Egyptian goddess of fertility. :)

What doth the community thinketh?

If it's not a well known mod it's yours. That's my point of view. If I was to name a ship the raynor I think I`d deserve a little stick for it since I know the community quite well.
If a modder who'd only been around for a couple of months did it I wouldn`t care.

In short if you know the name is taken don`t use it. If you can`t think of a ship by that name go ahead.

BTW I lay claim to every single unused name in the Encyclopedia Mythica here and now :D

Hmmm...

I suppose it depends what kind of ships are involved in the clash. If you had a fighter and a corvette from different campaigns, and they both had the same name, if wouldn't be a problem, 'cos you'd have GTF Whatever and GTCv Whatever, and you could tell them apart from the designation.

The problem would be if you had two ships of the same or similar classes with the same name - two different GVD Ramses would cause a lot of confusion, and one person would have to rename their ship to sort it out.

I don't think it matters in most cases, only where two of the same type of ship are named the same and are released publicly.

Personaly, as long as a distinstion is made, like which class of craft it is, then I don't have a problem with people using the same names as my own craft designs.  :V: took most of the good ones.:(

BTW, got a new one ready for public veiwing. ;) Only the design, not yet a model, but if I can gather some attension...

  • I'm a magic man, I've got magic hands.
I try to make my naming as unique as possible (and if I were a modder, I'd do the same)

And for that reason, I don't like to share ship names in camps either. Call me selfish, but it would be really annoying to see each campaign have a NTD Scythe or GTCv Excalibur or GVD Nile River

Obviously those would be examples of Extreme (and horrendous) clique's, so I just tend to keep as original as possible. It's a pet peeve of mine. :p

I don't consider it a major problem so long as the ships clearly diferentiated from each other.  I mean, I can't release most of the names I'm using because they're for ships in Reci I don't want to reveal (and I try to use fairly meaningful names for 'em).

The naming conventions I try to stick to when naming ships is I do my best to not accidentally put a ship in a mission which has been destroyed in a different campaign/mission that's set prior to what I'm making. And I try to avoid using any names that are already affiliated with a well known project. Other than that, if I think of a name I like, I'll use it. By the way, if I ever run into a 'GVD Nile River', I'm going to cry

I find the best way to name ships is to regurgiate names that are used in Present day navies. Since most of these names are reused anyway, they might still be in use in the FS era.

The NTC Glorious and Impervious spring to mind. I think they were two Royal Navy cruisers from WW2.

anyway, there's nothing wrong with using ship names more than once, as they might be meant to be 100 years apart, so a clash of names wouldn't matter.

We're talking here more about names for Mods rather than names for each ship. If you only used ship names that hadn`t been used we'd probably have run out by now :)

Heh heh heh....

I have a name for the evil-bad-guy-super-villains flagship in my campaign that nobody else has ever used, and that nobody will ever guess....;7

Anyway, yeah. I reckon just keep it simple, and don't go calling ships things like the "GTD Burning Fist of Righteous Vengeance" or some crap like that so it sounds 'ard as nails - although calling a ship something like that would probably make you look a complete tit anyway.

One can't lay a claim on a ship name!

I mean - Phoenix, Collossus, Avenger, Defiant, Victory, Nimitz, AL-****, Frankenbrezer..... etc - that are names! It's not like someone steals your entire ship!

And if you have two ships with the same name on your HDD just change the damn tbl entry, like I did (I changed the Raynor into Razor simply becoause I like the name better!)

I personally think this is alright since these user campaigns all run on different storylines anyway, but I have seen numerous instances where official V ship names are reused, which is definitely not a good idea for consistency reasons.

this could be a problem...
A grey wedge bristling with turbo lasers patrols a quiet sector of the galaxy when an unexpected visitor warps into the system... Immediately it is challenged and the quering party is not amused by the anwser...

Operator - "Sir contact with unknown vessel.. Does not match any Rebel or imperial profile..."

Commander - "Hail that ship immediately!"

Operator - "This is the Imperial starship Avenger, unknown vessel identify yourself at once!"

Unknown Vessel - "This is the EDF Avenger and we don't like the way you say hello, or the fact that you're using OUR name!"

Operator - "Sir vessel's energy reading is spiking fast and.."

Upper turrents of EDF Avenger prepare to rain white death and signature balls form at the tips...

Commander - "I see it BATTLE STATIONS!"

(Not to be continued)...

  Heheh please]...

Ever since I saw Empire Strikes back (82 I think) Avenger is my name! V stole it for their weapon... (give it back damn you!) ;)

Unless you can cpoyright a name (how petty), there is no point in getting uptight about another (insert anem here) ship. We all are creative in our own way and you CERTAINLY can't get upset about paraell developement.. (unless their ship not only shares the same name, but statistics, hull shape, textures, quirks, weapons load out, and you name hidden in the table where you shuld have put it commented out - HEY WAIT A MINUTE!!! That's MY freaking ship! :mad2: ) you get the idea...

People know who actually contributes to the community and who's ship is who's... I would consider it flattering to have inspired someone else, or to have anything I might have done used in a mod ect... on one condition: I would never seek credit BUT don't EVER claim a work as your own if you didn't do a damn thing to produce it.

IF you are simply a user (like me) admit it up front and never let people assume you can create anything. Or at least say (I was only involved in x,y, or z, the rest is NOT my work)...

As far as names go they should be free. It's NOT what names are used, it's HOW...

my 2 cents that truned into a whole dollar   L8tr..
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !
