erk... Interplay won't like this...

For legal issues this should be taken down HotSnoJ...

This isn't a converter, just a wrapper.

I still can't believe noone has reverse-engineered the MVE format yet.

Does Interplay allow the wrapper then? And while we're on the topic, what's a "wrapper"?

The two sequels to Descent, Starfleet Academy, Klingon Academy, etc...

Basically any game published by Interplay since Descent 2.
Gargoyles, Season 1.  Buy it, or DIE! :)

Yeah, the video quality blows.  Especially considering the file sizes.  Even bink would've been a better solution....and I *hate* bink.

its basically like that EXE file on the 3rd FS2 cd, of the pilot running thru the long hallway. same thing, the proggy just makes those, so i think altough they would not like this, it doesnt benefit us into say making a custom mve, it just allows us to view it outside of fs2....

adverse reaction?

Can we find some way to check with Interplay about this? I mean lets face it - we're not doing anything illegal by watching the movies through a third party viewer. We still have to pay to aquire them - it just saves having to load the original game to watch them at our leasuire, thats no bad thing if you ask me.

If I remember correctly they wanted DNet to remove it because it "made modifications" to their mve files. (by adding in a self-player into them  ) I don't see why it really matters at this point though; I mean, what are they going to do about it? :D Besides, MVEExtract is still being distributed despite Interplay; half the people here (including myself) have it and if anyone needs it you can just dispatch a quick email to someone around here.

The problem with mve is that it is like seven years old now. When it first came out (Descent 2, 1996), it was actually not bad, since the slow CD drive and processor speeds back then meant that heavy compression routines could not be used while still allowing for smooth playback, but times have changed since then. Interplay seems to still think that people are going to try and steal their precious mve format. :p

Interplay like MVE because the large file-sizes mean it's harder to make full warez copies of their games.

And if people start pulling MVE apart and making things smaller, better and faster then it'll mean their games are more easily pirated.

Thus, they don't like people ****ing with the code.

Technically, the Fallout guys have had a very nice extractor for their MVE format for a long time now, and FO2 is a lot newer than the FS series- and the franchise is still being actively marketed.

By the way, before you check, it really isn't the same format of MVE. I downloaded a copy from No Mutants Allowed in the hopes of getting a good copy, and it was no dice.

For that matter, the FreeSpace MVE wrapper doesn't work too well, either. Keeps whining about some .ocx file.
