MP3 encoder codec/wave-MP3 format encoder
I'm looking for an MP3 codec that is capable of encoding and something that will work with windoser XP (which keeps track of the codex differently than other win-OS).

I'm presently running "Fraunhofer IIS MPeg Layer 3.0" which is a decode only codec.  I want something that is capable of encoding directly from a basic option menu (such as the save on sound recorder).

Or if you can point me to some fancy (but free) program that will allow me to save wave files but using the MP3 format (wave-mp3s are coded differently to standard mp3 files) then I would also accept that.

Any help would be appreciated.  And no, changing my operating systems just for the sake of this is not an option at this point.

Use ogg vorbis, otherwise try finding LAME.

All in favour of twisting of stealth's head and thrusting it on a pike raise your hands... ;7

I already have LAME.  I downloaded it in my attempt to correct the problem.  Vorbis doesn't solve my problem either.  I either somehow need to find a way to get a new mp3 encoder capable codec into windoser XP or I need a program capable of coding wave files in mpeg layer 3 subformat.  I don't know of any programs capable of doing so, so I regon my best chance it to attempt to get the codec sorted.  But where would I get a suitable codec and how would I install it (remembering that XP works differently  ).

Well, if you've got Nero Burning ROM, you can use Nero Wave Editor to do it.

Hmm, it's not quite clear what you want to do here.  WAV in mp3 format?  That's a wav file with a tag and mp3 extension isn't it?

If you just want to convert wav to mp3, why doesn't LAME work?  If you need a frontend for it to do large batches, RazorLAME might help.

It may be that you're really looking for a _directshow_ mp3 filter for Windows XP.  Unfortunately, the ones that exist are commercial, although there are certain hacked ones you should be able to use.

If you're trying to encode a video and attaching an audio stream to it, do it separately and then remux them together.

OGG doesn't handle mp3.  It won't help.

Guys, read the thread.  Neither Vorbis (Ogg) or LAME do the convertion right.

I have an MP3 decode only codec.  I want one that will encode.  This isn't such a problem, the problem is where to get the codec from and how to install it into windows XP.

Most windows systems use and ini file to keep track of the codecs available to the system but XP uses the registry in several places to keep track of the available codecs so it'd be a true pain to even edit the reg manually and insert the codec info.

I just want to know where I can get an encode capable codec and how to install it for XP (or better yet a self installing one, for XP that is).

I've tried over 20 different programs now and none of them do what I want them to do.

The reason I want an encode capable codec is not to create direct MP3's but to convert the mp3 wave files.  Go and load up winamp, load in a wave file.  Now click the file info in winamp and read format... that is what I am after an mp3 format in a wave file.  These, despite being MP3 files, are coded differently to normal MP3s but most standard wave file players won't play MP3 files so I need a mp3 format wave file.

Follow me...

This might do it. But forget winamp - Command line only ;7

There might be a gui somewhere, though.

So...you're after THIS kind of sound quality, or am I totally mis-understanding what you're wanting?

Not quality, format...

Up on the winamp pic where is says FORMAT: PCM

It's the format I want to be able to change and encode while still keeping the file as a wave file.  To do this I need an mp3 encode capable codec or a program that can do it.  But people just keep pointing me towards programs that encode MP3 files and not Wave files in mp3 format.

You're not making much sense, what they ARE doing is changing the .wav into a .mp3

just download LAME, open up goldwave, open up .wav file, select save-as under the file menu. Select mp3 under the type, and the format of choice, and it converts the wav to an mp3.

Once you need to change it back to a .wav, do the same thing
Open up goldwave, open up the mp3, select save-as under file menu, select format as .wav, and codec as whatever you'd like.

And to be honest with you, I have no idea what a wave-mp3 is, as opposed to a standard mp3.

[edit] think i figured it out
download LAME and install
Open up the .wav, select save format as .wav, and as codec select mpeg layer(which one doesn't matter) and save...

I got a wave file that works and is a lot smaller than a wav of a different format

[color=66ff00]I highlighted the part that is confusing - you can't encode a wave as mp3 and still keep it as a wave file, that doesn't make sense. Also you can't change and encode a file format, it'd be one in the same since you aren't changing the quality.

Does that make sense?

Translation: You want a compressed WAV file, right?  Hell, Sound Recorder can do that.

Thats exactly it Fetty.  But you need an MP3 codec that is CAPABLE of encoding into MP3 formats (both standard and wave).  My problem is that I have a decode only codec.  I want one that can encode too and also a way to install it without having to edit my damn registery (XP's a b!tch like that).

And for those who need to be shown that a wave file can be in mp3 format: www.dryphed.com/sound/ashes.wav  (409kb)

save it and open it up, you'll see its in mpeg layer 3.0

Umm...XP has one installed by default dude.  Just open up the WAV file in Sound Recorder, click File, select Save As, click the Change button at the bottom of the prompt, set it to MP3 and pick a bitrate.  Then hit OK and you're done.
