Very recently, after exiting a game, nearly all my shortcut icons on my desktop and quicklaunch bars have disappeared/appear corrupted. (See screenshot) They can't be fixed by changing the icon back, or so it seems. Any clues on what caused the problem or how to fix it?

Reset/power down do the trick?

Maybe the files that archive your icons have been corrupted.  Very strange.  Perhaps remove all those icons and make them new after a reset.

I've seen icons replaced for short periods of time but not over a long period of time.

It's been like this since I turned off my computer last night... :(

Removing and remaking the shortcuts does seem to work, but non-shortut files are also affected. (such as documents and My Computer). Oddly enough, the icons on the desktop appear properly in details view. The ones on the quick launch bar don't appear properly in any view style. Here's another screenshot which is a bit more revealing than the last: Another screenshot

Do a virus scan. Lots of the nasty ones make the desktop go funky as a symptom. At least two I've had...

What about a simple "Rebuild Icons" in TweakUI?

Yup, your ShellIconCache has become corrupted.

What, you don't have TweakUI installed? :eek2:

TweakUI's rebuild icons did the trick. Thanks, all. :nod:

About the Jazz Jackrabbit 2 on my contact list, it's from about 1998-1999 when Jazz 2 was one of the few games with Internet play. In typical newbie fashion, I managed to get the ICQ #s of about 1/10 of the JJ2 community. :D I haven't played it for awhile, though, because of the lack of players and large number of battle servers. (I like CTF much better)

About the text files, notepad tends to get quite a bit of use as a post-it note substitute.

JJ2 had a net play option? Whoa, I completely missed that...

Start Game->Party mode->Internet play (TCP/IP)->Client

You'll probably need a few patches to get the listserver working properly, though.

I used to play that game a bit when it was released but the problem was that many of the people in the games were not playing at all; they were simply using it as a chat room, which made obviously made things somewhat boring. :p :D
