So... you don't like killing, but you're willing, even volunteering, to kill people.

OK, you want an analogy... does a cop join the force beacuse he wants to ride around shooting people, or to try to improve lives in his area.

This thread needs more beer. No wait, I need more beer. Always getting those two confused.
What frequency are you getting? Is it noise or sweet sweet music? - Refused - Liberation Frequency.

I'm applying for the Navy because:

1. I like aircraft
2. Women like the uniform
3. Making officer is a damn worthwhile goal in life

It ain't patriotism - hell, I'll have to swear by God to protect the Queen and I don't like either of them very much. I'm doing it for me. I want to fly fast jets for a living, and joining up is what it takes.

Hell, I'm joining the navy, too (United States, not UK).

1) I love aircraft (you'd be surprised, apparantly, every time we went on a plane when I was in the womb, I would kick and move about).

2)Meh. I think it provides a better story than:
"So, what do you do for a living?"
"Oh, I'm a fat-ass slob who writes PC games for a living."
"Right. I'll call you sometime"

3) Screw that! I don't want to be anything higher than a LT if that means I have to stop flying.

Anyways, I'd swear allegiance to the God and to my country (not the president, BTW).

Sorry if that went off-topic, but why the hell are you bashing DG for his future career choice? Hell, if I want to join up, bash me, too. I'm joining to have more excitement than flying an airline.

He joins because he's going to be getting paid for doing stuff. Possibly killing a few people. He doesn't mind, so long as he gets paid.

EDIT: Don't make me crack open the YMCA gay navy 'jokes'... :shaking:

Hehe, I wasn't going to say it myself in case I upset any HLP denizens, but it's true. And you're also right about stoppping at lieutenant. S'all about the flying

Let me know when you get your Hornet, we'll go dogfight :D

Go and find a cop and say that. Then come back and tell us if he agreed.

Now that's pretty damn pessimistic. Even for me.

DG: Actually, most of the cops in my area are redneck crackers who powertrip endlessly, shoot people for DWB offenses (at a rate of about one a week), menace anyone they can find to an extent that would be illegal for any non-cop, and pull all manner of dirty tricks that basically amount to entrapment so that they can bother people. To the point where they hardly ever arrest anyone for an actual crime, and murder, robbery, and drug dealing are actually pretty safe career choices. Baaad analogy.

Besides which, the basic job synopsis for a cop isn't "killing people". It's mostly "handing out tickets and arresting criminals". Contrast with the Army, whose pretty much sole job is to kill people, and they're damn proud of it.

Yeah, I was going to tell you not to bother with references to cops round your way, for some reason I thought better of it. I mean, in a place where the 'he needed killin' defence is valid, the cops are gonna be pretty much out of control.

I stand by my analogy. You've just got a bad lot of cops round about you.

People who write PC-games for a living are not necessarily fat slobs. I know some real party-animal code monkeys...

Oh, really? 'Cos I haven't been in many places where things are better. You ever hear of the blockades in Santa Fe? How about those corrupt assholes in NYC? Or maybe you prefer the New Jersey ones, who are famous for pulling over attractive women and forcing them to strip or get a hefty ticket?

Or are you more into the Midwest ****ers who pull over and beat just about any black guy that they find passing through? Maybe in England they're all right, but in this country cops are any asshole who wants immunity for his crimes.

They're slighly better than the ones in the southern part of the Southwest, though. Those guys picked up the whole "Mafia in uniform" thing from the Mexicans- think drug dealers with police shotguns and nasty tempers.

Exaggerating to make a point is a really, really poor argument... Especially since it can be so easily reversed.

Beh. They're also stupid, so it's easy to stay out of their way if you know how. Feel sorry for all the law-abiding citizens who don't have any real experience in avoiding angry porkers.

Anyway. Care to try that one again?

Trying to explain the whole "Well, I don't like killing people, but I guess I'm gonna go get a job killing people anyway" thing. Strikes me as awfully similar to the executioner's stance.

Probably because soldiers are executioners - they get told to kill people, they kill people.
