Video Driver severe problems.
Yesterday I thought it would be prudent to update the drivers for my Radeon. With this in mind I downloaded the latest ones from the ATi site. when I used their own installer I kept getting the BSoD. Unphased, I decided to use the update driver doo-hiickey in the windows control panel. This worked fine until it came to restarting windows, when it locked up on the Windows logo!

In the end I had to remove the Radeon and it drivers, and am now struggling aloing with the onboard SiS card. Anyonehelp?

BTW, I'm using Win98SE, and the Radeon is the 9000Pro. I was trying to install Catalyst 3 drivers.

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

OH!

Bugger!

Someone kick me in the Head!

But surely if I delete the old drivers, I'll have to use 640*480 16 colour to install the new ones?

True, but even with access to all you weapons, I might still be overwhelmed by the power of 78000 clones of Keiron Gillen!

More problems... ugh, my life!

Anyway, AFAIK I know I have removed every trace of an ATi driver from my machine, in an attempt to start afresh with the Radeon again. However, it still freezes on startup when I reach the Windows logo. I can start the machine in safe mode, so I don't think the problems with the card, anyone have a list of files that I should remove to cleanse the stain from ATi from my machine?

Get XP. That way, there's no BSoD :)

Go GeForce Go.

:)

Do you NEED the latest drivers? I had this problem when I had a GF2 Mx with the later Detonator drivers, when I got them to install my system was horribly unstable, just rolled back a few versions and voila, problem solved.

It's a simple case of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it"

Also, you do get the BSoD in XP, but it truly is "of Death". you have to SERIOUSLY **** up to get it.
What frequency are you getting? Is it noise or sweet sweet music? - Refused - Liberation Frequency.

It's a Sapphire 9000Pro, 128meg. And they were the 98 drivers. But that matters not now, as I am trying to use the drivers that came with the card, just to get it going again. But as I say, when I install the card, the machine locks up when I get to the Windows logo on startup. But I can still start in safe mode, so the problem must be with the driver. BUT I think I have removed the driver, unless there are still some remnants of it lurking somewhere...

Also, it makes a terrible whirring noise from the fan, could this be due to a build up off too much dust?

mine does that sometimes, it goes away after a while... it's probably just the sleave bearing fan over your gpu...

Video Driver severe problems.
The Plot Thickens.

It turns out that when it locks up on start up, it is only the display that freezes. Windows continues to load, but there is no evidence for this on screen, only the Win98 logo, with the bar at the bottom, static!

I found this out when I left it for a while to see what would happen, and I heard the error-box system sound. i then pressed return (as you do) and heard the windows start sound! (O Fortuna)!

I then proceeded to shut down in the normal fashion.

Anyone have any ideas?

Video Driver severe problems.
- Step ONE, boot in save mode (hold SHIFT while booting)
- Step TWO, remove videodrivers & install the standard VGA driver (standard PCI GFX card or something like that)
- step THREE, try to boot into normal mode
- If step THREE works, proceed to install new driver
- If step THREE fails, you're registry is most likely ****ed up, make a backup copy of it, (scanreg /backup) and delete the ENUM key under HK_LOCAL_MACHINE (do this in save mode, beware, this will KILL ALL DRIVERS)
- If this doesn't work, that you really should do a new install
(To install without formatting, rename the windows & program files dirs, and delete or rename win.com)

PS: If you have more questions, PM me, i'll help you if i can

Cheers,
