Cheers,
no, I don't often use boolean unless it really makes things simpler. I extrude, bevel, weld vertices, turn edges, cut polys, etc etc.
I already thought about that turret thing for the arms, but there's a couple issues:
1) the basic position of a turret, tsupidly enough, is "pointing up". so if I let the arms in that position, when it targets something, the arms will go down ( depressed shivan

). if I place the arms up at the begining, the shivan will look stupid ( cheerful shivan

)
2) they will rotate in every direction, imagine if the ship the shivan targets goes behing it ( broken shivan ).
btw, for that "weaponless turret" thinguy, a thing i've done quite some time ago, and that I should share with you ( doesn't have much link with what's said above, but the idea is the same ):
it was for my Descent campaign, I wanted the lifter ( you know, the green bot with claws ) to scream, like in descent. how to make that? with an engine sound, it would just loop stupidly.
so I gave the thing a weapon that does not damage, no visual effects, nothing, and gave the lifter scream sound as the weapon launching sound. it worked great
