disc drive settings
I just got a new CD burner and I was in the proces of instaling it when I realised that I already have
a)flopp drive (not sure what it's hooked up to)
c)hard drive (primary master, boot)
d)hard drive (primary slave)
e)partition of c
f)zip drive(secondary slave)
g)dvd rom(secondary master)

now

I have no IDE slots open for the new drive, but the primary IDE cable has three slots on it (seemed odd to me as I thought only two could be on one IDE; master/slave), wich makes me think that there is some way to get three drives on one IDE cable. so is there any way short of a SCSI to get my new drive into my system without sacraficeing an existing drive
I am going to see what is up with the flopy maybe I can do something there

it's a compaq, I'm not looking to put much more cash into it, as I'm getting a whole new system soon, I was just hopeing there was a quick and easy way out of this problem so I wouldn't need to take the thing apart when ever I wanted to switch between them, oh well.
I would like to know why the hell this one IDE cable has three openings on it (with matching power suply cables) :wtf:

I remember seeing some software years ago that allowed you to use three drives on the one cable but it was an old DOS TSR (I think) and probably would have a heart attack in a modern Windows environment. PCI ATA133 cards are relatively  inexpensive so your best bet in the short term would be to buy one of those.

Alienware is good!  Wish I could afford their mobile system to take to school this fall but $2500 is way out of budget.  If you're willing to wait AMD is going to release their 64-bit consumer-level processor in September sometime.

Q: What are the differences between the AMD Opteron processor and the AMD Athlon™ 64 processor?

A: The primary difference between the AMD Opteron processor, for servers and workstations, and the upcoming AMD Athlon 64 processor, for desktop and mobile systems, is in the number of HyperTransport technology links embedded on the chip. The AMD Athlon 64 processor will contain one HyperTransport technology link offering 6.4 GB/s data transfer while the AMD Opteron processor offers three links. The processors may contain different amounts of cache depending on the configuration a customer chooses.

This looks very exciting and worth waiting for unless you need a computer tomorrow.

So... PCI IDE cards... how fast are they compared to just plugging your HD in to your IDe controller?

fast enough to run most disc drives at a decent rate, then you can tie up your on-board ide slots with hard discs:drevil:

Your comp sounds like mine: I have two SCSI 9.1GB Seagates, a 30GB IDE IBM, a 10GB IDE Fujitsu, a Sony CD-RW and a Creative DVD drive. A huge pain to set up with. :shaking:

It was supposed to come out early this year too...

Any release date claim from AMD is best taken with a grain of salt.

You know you could just get a nForce3 Pro board when it comes out and hook up a Opteron to it :p

...and tell me, after you able to sit down yet? I'm willing to bet that, after the ass-raping AlienWare gave you, if you bent over and spread your cheeks you'd be indistinguishable from the goatse man...

heh, nVidia are almost as bad as AMD when it comes to announcing and delivering chipsets. I'd be surprised if nForce3 made it into general circulation before the beginning og next year.
