As I have now started expanding into the world the world of making whole new ships, I decided to create a 'Leviathan (Refit)' model, mounting extra and altered weapons.

Here's a modelview shot of it.  I included the gun normals to show the improved firepower.

(I've called it cruiser06 because I created reskins for the Lev and lilith, called cruisers 04 and 05)

Now, the ship is in game, and is stable, but there are some problems...

The targeting box that goes around the turrets, dosn't.  They are are all off.  The texture at the very front is missing:wtf:. And when no turret or subsystem is selected, my HUD says that the ship is only 1m away, even when it is over 4Km away:wtf::eek2::wtf: The guns do fire from the right places though.

All three of my other turreting attempts have not been this bad.  The first two had no flaws, and the third has missing textures:doubt:

Is there an experianced modeller out here with any ideas as to whats going on? or is willing to try and sort this out??

Tools used: TS3.2 + trueview, PCS 1.3.4, modelview

Missing textures is usually down to one of two things. Either you've forgotten to move the PCX files into your FS2 folder or you've forgotten to convert them to 8 bit PCX files.

As for the other stuff, I'm stumped.

This looks pretty cool. :nod: What you might want to do is post the COB. Then one of us can crack it open and see exactly what's wrong with it, fix it, and tell you what we did. It's a whole lot more productive than just making wild guesses, because AFAIK, we've never run into this sort of thing before.

I Suspect you need to move the axis for the turret objects to the center of the turret, there is a button that lets you do this in Truespace. The icon is a wireframe box and an axes, select the turret object and use it to move the axis.

What Karajorma said. If thats not the case, does the section that's missing have a non flat polygon in it?

Not sure about this, is the axis for the whole ship in the center of the object? Check in TS, If not moving it to the center might fix this.

for the missing texture, you see a hole? probably it is due to an instable face, if not, well karajoma should be right, wrong name or more than 256 colors
for the targeting box, the only thing i can think of is that you glued by mistake a light that is far far away from the model, i'm not completely sure but i think it could result in distorted bounding box.
i don't think it is something related to converter, but try to switch from pcs to cob2fs2 or viceversa, depending by what you already used

Well, the texture problem is really weird as it uses the same texture as the other Lev model I have, which works fine.

That face should be flat, as I inported the Lev model and did not alter the hull model.  I just changed the turrets.  And I'm pretty sure I moved all the axis of said turrets to the centre of said turrets, but...

I removed the LODs from the model, but the debris is still there, and works (gasp!)

Hope someone can fix it.  I really would like to have this.

Doh! I just remenbered! I forgot to include 1 small map with the zip!

It will say 'can not load Matrix.XXXXXX'

If you are working with this, just put a placeholder map on the end of the little block that sticks out of the base section of turret02 (it was placeholder anyway.  I was planing on making a 'gun camera' type texture for it!)

I looked at the COB, OK my prognosis,

The Axes for the for the turrets are all over the shop, this effects the bounding boxes.  Look at turret01 as an example. Click on the turret01 group in true view, click the axes button to select the axes, If you can't see it imediatly use the look at current object button to find it, its way outside the hull of the ship at the front, if you look at the turret01 geometry (not the group with the light just the 3d object) and do the same you see its way off to the side of the ship.

Move the axes for both to the center of the turret object.

The hierarchy looks off as well. The Debris01, 02, 03 etc  groups should be moved to the same level as your LOD0 hull. So they should be in the group currently titled Cruiser01a-hull.

I moved some of the axes and reconverted it and it worked.

I then promptly deleted it before I realised what I was doing :o

BTW, did you figure out what was going on with that missing texture on the nose? That I find hard to understand...

Ok, targeting turrets now works properly, and the ships distance is measured correctly.

However, there is still that missing face.....

Just out of intrest is the bit that's missing the bit that's textured with the 'Matrix.XXXXXX' pcx you mentioned? It's just that for the brief time I was looking at this I had a place holder in there and I don't recal seeing any missing faces in freespace.

Noooo, it is a section of the hull, of the :V: hull that I did not alter.

Well, I DID attempt to edit a vertex on the hull, but it was not one of those used by the face in question....

The only times the face doesn't show is in FRED and in game, but it shows in Truespace, Modelveiw, and in PCS, so:confused:

Can't hurt to manually triangulate the face.  One of the vertexes may have undergone a slight shift along the z axis (front or back) that could cause the face to be non-planar.  You may never notice it not being flat, and it may fall within Truespace's tolerence, but it still may be there.  So just use the add edge tool to split the polygon into triangles and see if that helps.
