Lucas turned him down, personally I think that Mr. Spielberg could do an excellent job as he puts characters before effects and he can tell an interesting story from an interesting perspective.

My question is this:
If you could choose any director to make episode 3 who would it be and why?

Getting lots of answers here ppl but not a lot of reasoning. I think spielberg would do the best job as he portrays characters well and has a good eye for both close focused filming and wider picturesque shots that actually have relevance other than just being pretty.

I've learnt the hard way that sticking a fork in the plug socket isn't a good idea.

I've stopped imagining what Star Wars directed by someone other than GL would be like for much the same reason.
