Did I mention that full diplacement is 59 700T?

Oh, and big guns usually have a range that equals their caliber in mm/10. Thus, a 406mm cannon would have approx 40km range!;7 ;7

Or this baby:

Description: The Grumman F-14 Tomcat is a supersonic, twin-engine, variable sweep wing, two-place strike fighter. The Tomcat's primary missions are air superiority, fleet air defense and precision strike against ground targets.

Features: The F-14 has visual and all-weather attack capability to deliver Phoenix and Sparrow missiles as well as the M-61 gun and Sidewinder missiles for close in air-to-air combat. The F-14 also has the LANTIRN targeting system that allows delivery of various laser-guided bombs for precision strikes in air-to-ground combat missions. The F-14, equipped with Tactical Air Reconnaissance Pod System (TARPS) is the Navy's only manned tactical reconnaissance platform.

Allso:
Description: Long-range air-to-air missile, carried in clusters of up to six missiles on the F-14 Tomcat.
Background: The Phoenix missile is the Navy's only long-range air-to-air missile. It is an airborne weapons control system with multiple-target handling capabilities, used to kill multiple air targets with conventional warheads. Near simultaneous launch is possible against up to six targets in all weather and heavy jamming environments. The improved Phoenix, the AIM-54C, can better counter projected threats from tactical aircraft and cruise missiles.

Oh well in that case it has to be Armageddon. A weapon that's likely to kill everything on the map is obviously the way to go

The most expensive folly in French military history remains the Charles de Gaulle, commissioned for the French navy in 1986. It was the pet project of the country's then president, François Mitterrand. The carrier was intended to be a potent symbol of military might but was so riddled with faults it proved to be more of a humiliating French farce.

When it was finally taken to sea last November on its first long-distance trials, part of one 19-ton propeller broke somewhere in the western Atlantic and the carrier was forced to limp home. For every year in operation the ship has to spend four months in dock undergoing maintenance and repairs.

Even if as you say we havnt built a good ship in 20 years  at least it didnt take us 20 years to build a bad one.

You're talking to me..
RULE 1: Choices to compare must be out of the same time period!
RULE 2: If fiction, they must be at least from the same dimension or reality.

In response to the Lafayette it over uses stealth features at the detrement of efficiency and capability in the battlefield a better blend and general use would be the t-23 frigate or the spanish F-100 class.

The lafayette itself is very stealthy however the wake is still detectable by most decent radar (especially airborn) from long range also whether as a result of having to make the ship stealthy (or to save money on coating everything in even more radar absorbant paint) or just poor design they are woefully underarmed for their escort roles and as individual vessels, the Lafayettes would be more useful with a better weapons suite, aka VLS cells, etc.

whatever you say.
oh, and the lost fan on the cdg was in november 2001, and since then it's been working fine, evrything has been fixed.
check your sources.
about the lafayette, I can't even find sources on what weaponary it has ( bare the taiwan version that we didn't arm ), so I'm curious to see a doc about it before discussing it further away.
anyway, it has greatly reduced noise emission ( low cavitation emission ), so I wonder where you get that idea that the wake is easily detectable.

That's for the French ships, anyway. It does also list the armaments for the Saudi and Thai versions, so the Thai one is armed.

heh, of course it's armed, it's a warship :p
it's just it was sold unarmed.

oh, and 8 exocets + 16 crotale does not sound "underarmed" to me ( a single exocet can sink most ships ).

True, even the George Leygues only has 4 Exocets, and it's classed as a destroyer.

yeah, but it's an antisubmarine destroyer, not much point having many exocets on that.

The configuration of the launchers is poor though as i said it needs something like VLS cells (which would ironicaly be more stealthy).
