A Cyclone missile cruiser and an Orion attack frigate escort a Munin fleet scout through the middle of a nebular cloud.  In the lead the Cyclone has its lidar scanning system active, the laser beams visible in the nebula's gas and dust.

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

Soon as in 3 weeks soon. (Week 8 begins this coming Monday; Week 10 is our last week.) I'm sure he'll come of his own accord anyway, but posting would be a different matter - the kind of person he is, whenever he gets slightly involved with something, he commits all his free time to it. Neither of us can really afford to do that this year, unfortunately. :sigh:

Render's nice, Shrike. I guess you design your ships to be realistic (unlike the FreeSpace designers), huh?

[color=66ff00]The ships look quite deadly for some reason, the 'whiskers' are clever though, in design as well as in realisation.

Good idea with those lasers, Shrike. In Real life, however, even nebulas (planetary or not) wouldn't make lasers visible. The gas in them is many times thinner than the thinnest vaccum we can create in a lab.

depends really, what the neb is made of, particle debris(i.e ICE) may make lasers visible...

Yeah. I agree but renders are always done in a strange version of real life where you get lens flare without a camera, asteroid fields of unrealistic density and nebulae so thick you can't see your hand in front of your face :D

Well, hey, maybe they didn't render them but actually flew out to Delta Serpentis and took a few happy snaps with their Sony Cyber-shot cameras. Or not. :)

yes, the idea is nice, but it's really dependant on the speed of the ship and the range of the laser... better not go too fast for instance, if the lasers don't go too far.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
