Good riddance. Just to give you some idea of how old he was: He ran for President. In 1948. His racial views were... interesting, to say the least.

Stryke, Anon, fire away.

EDIT: Just found this gem:
Quote
As a Democrat during his first decade in the Senate, Thurmond once filibustered a civil rights bill for 24 hours and 18 minutes, stopping only when the Senate physician threatened to drag him from the floor. It was the longest filibuster in Senate history.

Why? He hasn't been an active menace to the country for years. Ancient politics don't really factor in when there's this much new scum in town.

Ol' guy had one hell of a life. Pretty cool, I'd say, if a bit long for my tastes.

What, you think I'd speak ill of such a dedicated, loyal and patriotic man? You think I'd mock or berate the dead because of mistakes he made over half a century ago? You insult me, sir. I challenge you to a duel!

[q]In 1968, he married Nancy Moore, a former Miss South Carolina. He was 66; she was 22. They had four children and had lived apart for several years.[/q]

:eek2:

[q]Thurmond was the third Southern politician from the turbulent civil rights era to die this week.

Former Georgia Gov. Lester Maddox, who, like Thurmond, was a segregationist but who never backed away from his views, died Wednesday. Former Atlanta Mayor Maynard Jackson, the South's first black big-city mayor when he was elected in 1973, died Monday. [/q]

Hmmm.... :wtf: :nervous: :shaking:

[q]"No matter how tough the going gets, I don't give in and don't give up. After all, they don't call me Thurmond-ator for nothing!" he said.[/q]

:wtf: :wtf: :wtf:

Anyway, I originally thought this topic was about some Storm Thurmond that left 100 people dead so far. :nervous: :p

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

Actually, no. He was an active menace to this country as late as last year before he retired.
[I am not really here. This post is entirely a figment of your imagination.]

Nonfunctional for most of that time.

Isn't it kinda... cowardly to wait 'till the guy's dead to start taking potshots at him, by the way? I mean, a few months back, I woulda ripped away at him as best I could without doing any research, but now... what's the point?

I don't thinmk epople are because he's dead, people are because he's been brought up. If he was brought up here like 6 months ago, I'm sure everyone would have said the same thing.

I hope to god you're joking and didn't use the universal accepted acronym for Black Entertainment Television as an acronym for some yuppie napkin-folding channel.
