EDIT: ****! **** **** ****ing **** ****!

Er... to amend all that. The FS2 videocapture is done and MP3s are soon to follow, but they are not available for download yet, and there are other problems. Anyway, watch this space- by tonight, you'll either see the beginnings of the HOTU release or more ****ing.

There is a reason for the word filter. Stop bypassing it. // Sandwich

That's the secret Bosch monologue.

Anyway, I'm pissed. Expressing my opinion on the matter more coherently would get me banned and then nothing would come out, since I still need help from a few specific people here, and wanna check with the community. You'll see why after certain more sedentary individuals get the hell off the uplink computer and I can send off a sampler. Things'll do for now- they'll have to, since exactly jack **** ever comes out every time anyone decides to take the time to finish a product before releasing it around here, but there's definitely gonna be a release 2.

Incidentially, this is the first I've noticed how bad the cutscenes were. I mean, the camera scripting and everything is fine, but Volition/Interplay really needed to hire another model and effects guy.

BTW good work Stryke, the game would be a little disjointed without those cutscenes.

Try to use a few less ****s though. ;)

[color=66ff00]The filter is quite a simple beastie, easy to circumvent if you really feel the need to. *shrugs*

We'd prefer it if you didn't though.

I suppose it's close enough to upload that I can describe the specific issues now and the visuals will come soon after. Bascially, the main problem is that the movies look like ass. They captured at a little over 4 FPS, and only managed to look tolerable after a ludicrous amount of work (especially for me- I'll never be able to respect myself as a proper slacker again) and fattening them to a probably unacceptable degree. Worse is the sound- I advise turning down your speakers and not wearing headphones, 'cos all the bass sounds sound like a noise that should be coming from the aforementioned ass. I'm not a sound person and don't know how to eliminate static beyond applying any Goldwave filters with "noise" in the title, so if anyone can fix that be my guest. All in all, the intro and Bosch monologues (which barely have any movement or sound anyway) did pretty well under the circumstances, but the supernova sequence and the Bastion one are pretty horrible- I've included both the good and the bad, for your amusement.

The end cutscene.

The intro

From here out, the primary concern is the sound. That's out of my hands, if nobody else can work a sound studio it'll remain as is. The video can be improved for a second release if I or someone foolish enough to volunteer snags two gigs or so of memory. I've got a pretty fast machine even given its age and if I can't get it up to even 5 FPS that means most of y'all won't do much better. Right now, I'm gonna work out whether I can compress these better, get rid of all the lovely glimpses of my cluttered, ugly desktop, brand the intro so that HLP gets due notice as the FS site and I can suit my self-aggrandizing nature, and ship 'er out. Anyone up for V2?

I have a good PC (gig of RAM, Radeon 9000 video card, 1.8Ghz processor), but for some reason the regular .exe of fs2 won't work...time for a reinstall.

You're not really much better off than me- I suspect the memory's 500mb, but when you factor in the second CPU (and the troubleshooter mostly focussed on the CPU, leading me to believe it's a lot more important for some reason), it's about the same as yours.

They definately used other dudes for FS1. I remember it being mentioned somewhere that FS1 cutscenes were animated by Interplay staff, while FS2 was entirely [v]'s work. So there's a difference yes.

Nonetheless, they are still more intense than most other games I've seen.

GE: Compressed cutscenes and sound files, when combined with the latest SCP release, provide a viable slimmed-down version of Freespace for easy download. Such as, say, download from HOTU, which means more attention to the game, which means more hits here, which means (maybe) more life injected into the community, spurring people to actually get **** done for once.

Stu: Yeah, the camerawork and "directing" is great, but their graphics guy shoulda been shot. I mean, he took the game models, threw the color maps in as bump maps for texturing, and used those with sprites of the ingame effects! Add a crappy semi-poseable low-poly Bosch model (with no face, because faces require some modicum of skill, which is plainly not evidenced in the handwork), and you've got your movie pack. It's all at about the same technical level as any moderately intelligent newbie would come up with, and given that most of the other stuff in FS isn't at all amateurish you gotta wonder what they were thinking...

most of the realy good material from FS2 was from FS1, though FS2 had by far the better engine, don't beleve me look at the textures from both, or for that matter the main halls, fs1 had at least twice the detail in the MHs

heh? the FS1 textures were infinitely better than the FS2 ones ( just compare them  - The FS2 maps are all 256*256 max, some FS1 maps were over 1000 pixels tall ). Pb is, the engine couldn't handle them.
Where do you think that high res texture pack came from?

I did not say look at the rendered ships in fs1 and compare them to fs2, I said look at the textures, as in extract them and open them in an image editing program of some kind, if I must I will demonstrate.

Yup...ships like the Athena and the Apollo really had some sweet looking texture maps in FS1...its just that Glide was 256x256 limited and D3D sucked at that time and the cards were too slow (like my S3 ViRGE 3d decellerator).
