if you're in the middle of a snowstorm, there might be chances you're already in the negatives, but maybe that's just me? :doubt:

Stu's Rant of the day: And You Thought I Didn't Live In The Mediterranean
We had to run Cross-Country in the ****ing snow. It'd hit -20 and the teachers would be like "Well, we'll let you wear tracksuit bottoms if you've got them."

This one time there was fog so thick that, I swear to God, you could only see maybe 4-5 meters, and even that was hazy. And they're like "Oh, you'll be okay, you all know the way". Thing was, not everyone did. One of the fastest guys in the whole year came damn near last because he got lost and had to wait for the fog to clear some before he could find his way to the finish.

And to cancel school entirely! Damn. Not a chance. We'd have bomb threats and they'd be all "Well, the police have finished searching half the school so we're going to let those who have classes in those areas back in to lesson". Coz it's not like a bomb would affect areas that'd been searched by the police :doubt:.

Only times I remember school being cancelled was once when there was so much snow, only 6 teachers (outta some 50-odd) could get in. And another time when it was -20, the boiler was ****ed, it was pretty-much pitch black outside, the windows were rattling and cracking with the wind and sleet, and someone rang the firebell. Thankfully, they realised that making us stand outside while they checked for a fire would probably end up in fatalities and just let everyone WALK home early.

And now you see why I hated school.

Oh and it was like 30 here today, and now I'd say it's about 20.

Bah, my high school did the same thing, and it was on a hill. Only for hill, read mountain. Every heavy snowstorm, the town below would just get buried, and the entire road up would freeze solid with an inch of pack ice, so we'd have to walk up this 45* slope for about twenty minutes to get there. On the other hand, sometimes little kids would slip and slide all the way back down the road, which was pretty funny to watch- the rest of us having had the good sense to bring heavy boots for digging footholds in and all.

Also, there'd always be this little jumble of SUVs whose owners were dumb enough to believe the bullcrap you see on the ads about their cars lying at the bottom of the hill at the end of the schoolday, which always made me feel good.

I bet, on days to dangerous to do out-side ****, they never made you do 'country-dancing'.

That was humiliating and degrading for all involved.

The only highlight in the few times they made us do it was when my pal behind me thought it'd be funny to keep treading on my heels. I warned him once. He laughed and did it again. I warned him twice. He laughed and did it again. I warned him a third time. He laughed and did it again. I turned around, punched him, chased him around the room, kicking him in the back, got grabbed by a teacher, purposely thrown into a cluster of about 50 sharp, metal music stands and given a detention.

Thorn: Uneducated provincial West Coast yokels... ever hear of the Blue Ridge? The Appalachians? What they lack in altitude they make up for in steepness, impassability, and per-acre hillbilly population. This wasn't on one (God forbid, the BR mountains are actually fun to hike on, provided you're well armed and don't mind rock climbing), but it was on one of the steeper foothills.

KT: Well, maybe it was 30* in parts. We never actually measured it, but it certainly was uncomfortable to stand on flatfooted and rolling things down the hill (balls, small children, cars with their brake lines cut... well, the last bit woulda worked if the punks in my class weren't such goody-goody pussies, even tried to take my Swiss Army Knife away...) attempting to gain record speeds was a school pasttime. We musta beat 30 with one kid, he didn't flail his arms so much as the others so it was an unimpeded roll...

Never mind that there isn't invariably a storm cloud about whenever it's bleeding cold out, and ignoring completely that it can actually get "too cold to snow" anywhere a bit north of where I live...

Actually I'm an East Coast "yokel"
I just moved out here last September..
I've seen the Appalachians. The Appalachians "dont got ****" on the Rockies. You want steep? Try climbing Mt. Garibaldi or Mt. Baker. Christ... Baker is an active volcano. If it ever decides to blow it'll fill the entire Fraser valley.

Thorn: And an active volcano ain't got **** on rednecks who make the movie "Deliverance" look like a best-case scenario. Your point?:p

And if you know where to look, you can get 300-foot cliffs out here. If there's much steeper on the West Coast, I don't particularly care, as I'm never likely to climb even that myself and geography makes for the lamest pissing contest ever, removing any benefit to be had from much higher.

Damn East Coast Puritan... the Appalachians are large hills not mountains :p

Real mountain ranges have snow all year round, glaciers, and are so steep and inhospitable that only the few YUPIs doing some climbing ever go there ;)

Well at least we have geography. The only way anyone can tell where they are in the east is wether or not a U.S. or Confederate flag is being flown :ick

Dont forget the "mostly solid rock" bit... no trees... trees cant survive that high up...
If it isnt hard for you to breathe at the top of the thing, after doing no exercise, its not a mountain....

Actually, anywhere in the South outside of Georgia and Mississippi it's generally both simultaneously. You gotta love ambivalence spawned by ignorance.:D

And that's not true at all. If all you see for miles around is old people, you're in Florida. If you see corn, you're in Alabama. If you're getting hung from a streetlamp for no readily apparent reason, you're in Mississippi; getting eaten alive by mosquitoes the size of B-2 bombers, Georgia; lost in fog, Massachusetts; unable to breathe, New Jersey, getting rained on, another part of New England. And, of course, you know you're in Virginia if you get hit by four cars in succession, then have your lifeless body dragged off and cornholed for a day straight by a deranged trucker who stinks of vomit and cheap beer. It's rather the feeling of living in the entire region, that.
