I would like someone here to make a pack of shine maps, they are sort of similar to glow maps, but insted of tagging -glow you add on -shine to the end of the name, in the thread there are two examples, what you need to do to make a shine map from an existing texture is generaly just paint it's cockpit white and any glowing parts black, anything you don't want to shine paint black or darken, parts that you do want to make shine ether leave as they are in the origonal texture or brighten (or paint white)

the current configuration will use the base hull texture as the shine map, this is generaly goo enough, but for things like cocpits on fighters and large glowing sections adgustments should be made.

I did the glowmaps pretty well, didn't I? I would be overjoyed to make the shine maps!

Here's the question: do we want everything shiny, or have most things matte, with only shiny accents like cockpits and brushed metal? I'm more inclined toward the latter, since I really don't like that Sobek. If it's not done properly the effect would quickly become tiresome.

I'll have to do some testing and see what looks best. This has opened a whole new realm of FS modding. We can have GLASS.

you're right about the sobek, but though it isn't perfict I do like the way the deimos looks
I was hopeing to have most of the surface marginaly shiny to make it look like metal, you can see how it almost looks bump mapped in a few of thouse pics

That was pretty interesting, the lighitng was similair to a quake 3 lighting effect, its a good start bob. what i also found weird was that, u said the textures on meshes, as well as beams and weapons, were effected with this enhancement, does it also effect backgrounds and effects (weapons, beams etc.)? cause the backgrounds i have looked more vibrant dude!

so far one of ur best works since the glow maps.

my system suffered no crashes, ran fine for the hr i tested it, on DX8. 450mhz celeron 200+sdram, tnt2 32mg card.

good stuff...

by the way, i suggest for the viewing thing u were working on, make only like 4 points of zoom, from .45 to 1.30 because diff ships have diff perspectives, give the player the ability to control his fov... :yes:

I have made an update, with more acurate math behind the lighting calculation, I was squareing a multiple when I should have ben multiplying a square :D

and weapons and other dynamic lights are now suported, though tweakage is still required.

I assume you mean pure green with white or light grey shine mapped onto it? If not, how would this look Bob? (I'd test for myself, but FSO still doesn;t work properly on this comp, I so need an upgrade :()

well you could use the -trans tag

anyway last update of the night, I fixed the bug were off screen vecors didn't get rendered corectly, so if you had a ship half on the screen any polygon that was half on the screen would get drawen incorectly, I strongly recoment everyone update, as this will be the last (big one at least) untill tomoro night at the earliest.

Can you imagine how much taller the thread would be then? :p

As for new possibilitie, I don't see too many. Not to put a damper on it or anything, it's friggen awesome looking but it doesn't really open up much more than glowmaps did, given that it's a visual mod only. What it will do is, when someone (that's you by the way, Petrach) contacts PC Gamer he can send screenies of a fighter and/or small battle in original FS2, and then another with FSO in all its shiney, glowmapped glory.

You know, this's got me thinking. The SCP have all but fixed FS2s clipping problems with higher poly models, added glow maps, glow points, shine maps, and looks likely to add transperency mapping in the not too distant future. Between all these changes, they've all but allowed FS2 to be the graphical equal of any modern space shooter. How the hell awesome is that?

What modern space shooter? FS2 was probably the last true space sim... well, maybe apart from Tachyon (which isn't much younger than FS2 anyway) - and Freelancer doesn't count because it's, well, crap.

Anyway, this is truly fantastic work. Can't wait until someone makes a texture pack for all the ships! Kudos to you Bob :)
