New description write-ups for some MODs
Here's a list of new write-ups I've made for some MODs that I DL'ed from the Incidental Warfare website the other day:

GTF Vesuvius by Aldo

GTB Peregrine by Aldo

GTCa Warlock by Aldo

GTI Scylla by Dark

GTI Acheron by Robin Varley

GVI Cairo by Bobboau

GTCv Phobos by Woomeister

SI Arachnas by Woomeister

I took it on my own initiative to make these write-ups because these are (IMHO) some excellent MODs but their tech descriptions had some grammar errors. I made these new write-ups in the hope that the MODders would see them and update their MODs with these new write-ups. (It seems a shame to me to have such good MODs with less than grammatically perfect tech descriptions.)

Anyway, here are the new write-ups (along with some notes I made along the way).

----------------------------
GTF Vesuvius
OLD Tech Description:"The Vesuvius is the next generation of GTVA space superiority fighters.  Improving on the Myrmidon in almost every area, the Vesuvius is one of the most powerful and versatile fighters in the GTVA.  It's successful deployment in quelling fringe rebellions has seen it become the standard GTVA fighter."

New Write-up: "The Vesuvius is the next generation of GTVA space superiority fighters. Improving on the Myrmidon in almost every area, the Vesuvius is one of the most powerful and versatile fighters in the GTVA. Its successful deployment in quelling fringe rebellions has seen it become the standard GTVA fighter."

Additional Notes: The only error that I changed here was "it's" to "its".

--------------------
GTB Peregrine
OLD Tech Description: "The GTB Peregrine is a multi-role bomber, capable of performing as a fighter.  The Peregrine is most commonly used as a strike bomber, or as an anti-bomber ship, launching long range trebuchets.  In close combat, the Peregrine is almost as good as any other ship in the GTVA.  The remarkable abilities of the Peregrine lie in it's advanced Darwin-Helis reactor system, which allows unparalleled strength.  However, the shortage of suitable materials means only a select few squadrons have recieved a complement of this ship.", 3010)

New write-up: "The GTB Peregrine is a multi-role bomber, capable of performing as a fighter. With its variable payload, the Peregrine is most commonly used as either a strike bomber carrying bombs and torpedoes, or as an anti-bomber ship launching long-range Trebuchet missiles. In close combat, the Peregrine is almost as good as any other ship in the GTVA arsenal. The remarkable abilities of the Peregrine lie in its advanced Darwin-Helis reactor system, which provides unparalleled power. However, only a select few squadrons have received a complement of this ship due to the scarcity of suitable construction materials."

--------------------
GTCa Warlock
("The GTCa Warlock is one of the largest spacefaring warships ever constructed.  Over 4.8km long, it's vast hull can hold 100 wings of fighters and bombers.  In addition, the warlock is armed with the most advanced GTVa beam weaponry, able to engage multiple attacking destroyers.  Part of the new supercarrier class, Warlocks head the 1st, 2nd and 3rd fleets of the GTVA, and a further 2 are under construction in Deneb.", 3057)

New Write-up: “The GTCa Warlock-class supercarrier is one of the largest space-faring warships ever constructed. Over 4.8 kilometers long, its vast hangar can accommodate 100 wings of fighters and bombers. In addition, the Warlock is armed with the most advanced GTVA beam weaponry, enabling it to engage several hostile destroyers at once. Three Warlocks have been assigned as flagships to the 2nd, 4th and 5th Fleets and another two are under construction in Delta Serpentis.”

Additional notes: 1st Fleet is at Earth, which is still cut off (morale issue: see FRED Zone) and Deneb is a Vasudan system, but this is a Terran ship so it has to be constructed at a Terran shipyard so that is why I changed it to Delta Serpentis (it’s the Terran capital system and seems like the most logical place to construct a warship of this size). Also, the 3rd Fleet was stationed at Capella, the system that wasdestroyed by the Shivan supernova. Any ship assigned to the 3rd Fleet that escaped from Capella (like the GTD Aquitaine) was probably reassigned to a still-existing fleet. Please see my FRED Zone Guidelines to see a set-up of the GTVA Fleet Organization. The link is here: http://pub11.ezboard.com/fjtofrm11.showMessage?topicID=23.topic

--------------------
GTI Acheron
OLD Tech Description: "The Archeron is the newest in defence beam technology, unlike the Mjolnir Cannon this is a small installation. It has 4 Main Cannons and Several Smaller weaponary. When used in numbers it can easily take out a Ravana Class Destroyer.", 3041)

New write-up: “The GTI Acheron is the newest development in front-line defense platforms. It is similar to the Mjolnir remote beam cannon in that it has been designed to help protect vital front-line installations. However, unlike the unmanned Mjolnir, the Acheron carries a modest crew complement of gunners, thereby qualifying it as a small installation rather than a gun platform. Armed with 4 beam cannons and 12 laser, missile and flak turrets, the Acheron can defeat most cruisers. When used in groups, the Acheron is easily capable of repelling a Ravana-class destroyer.”

------------------
GTI Scylla
OLD Tech Description: "In the time after the Hades rebellion of 2335, The very first Scylla class installation was produced. These installations have been built for Shivan weaponry study. The first beam laser was created by a Vasudan in the Remnent, a Scylla class installation. Scyllas have a large beam cannon, used mainly for weapon testing, AAAf, along with Laser, and Flak turrets, provide for minimal defense. Where these fail, though, the Scylla has a fighterbay with 2 fighter and bomber wings, strong enough to destroy any threat that may come. These Outposts though used to be part of a GTVA mining network and were converted. The NTF took some of these stations and claimed them as their own, and even used their design on some installations, so not all are known.", 3054)

New Write-up: "The Scylla-class installation was first constructed after the Hades rebellion in 2335. While these installations were primarily designed for asteroid mining, several Scylla outposts were since converted to beam weapon research and development. Scyllas are armed with a large beam cannon (used mainly for weapons testing), and 12 laser, missile and flak turrets. It also has a hangar bay capable of housing 20 fighter wings. During the NTF Rebellion, several of these installations were captured by the Neo-Terran Front and refitted as outposts but were since recaptured by the GTVA when the rebels were defeated in 2367."

--------------------
GVI Cairo
OLD Tech Description: "the GVI Hathor is a large Vasudan installation commssioned just recently, it is mainly used in systems that have large military outposts, where arcadias are not equiped with beams Hathors have enough firepower to take out a destroyer., it is comparable to the terran Arcadia installations. Though slightly smaller, it packs a much more powerful punch with four large beam cannons, and six anti-fighter beams. Its design is much more oriented to capital ship defense than bombers, which has proven a hindrance at times. But it's expansive fighter bay can accommodate more than 30 fighter or bomber wings.", 3054)

New Write-up: "The GVI Cairo installation is comparable to the Arcadia and, like its Terran counterpart, serves many of the same functions, including coordination of military forces. The most prominent difference between the two is that the Cairo has far more potent anti-warship beam weaponry. Though slightly smaller than an Arcadia, the Cairo packs a more powerful punch with its 26 turrets, including five large beam cannons. Its design is oriented more towards capital ship defense than the repelling of bombers, but the Cairo makes up for this with its expansive hangar bay that can house 30 fighter and bomber wings."

Additional notes:
New:             $Closeup_pos:           0.0, 0.0, -3162
this was changed from:    $Closeup_pos:           0.0, 0.0, -2762

--------------------
GTCv Phobos
OLD Tech Description: "After the success of the Deimos Class Corvette, work began on a far tougher warship. The Phobos is the most heavily armed corvette in the GTVA. With 41 turrets it has the capability to fight against any class of known warship. Command hopes that the Phobos will be in service for decades to come. With the GTCa Warlock the Phobos has the newest in Beam Weaponary, information about this is classified level Phi.", 3056)

New Write-up: "After the success of the Deimos-class corvette, work began on a far tougher warship. More massive than a Deimos, the Phobos is the most heavily armed corvette in the GTVA. Armed with 41 turrets, it has the capability to hold its own against any class of known warship. Like the GTCa Warlock, the Phobos is armed with the newest beam weaponry. Due to its superb design, Allied Command expects that the Phobos will be in service for decades to come."

--------------------
SI Arachnas
OLD Tech Description: "The Arachnas is the first Shivan Installation ever encountered by the GTVA. It seems to be a repair facility and an outpost for the Shivan Fleet. Unlike the Shivan Capital ships, the Arachnas is lightly armed with only 20 turrets, however it is very dangerous for small craft and even corvettes. Though a destroyer would easily defeat it.", 3063)

New Write-up: “The Arachnas is the first Shivan installation ever encountered by the GTVA. Far larger than the Arcadia or Cairo-class installations, it seems to double as both a military outpost and a repair facility for the Shivan fleet. Despite its light armament of only 20 turrets, the Arachnas' weapons and fighter complement pose a very dangerous threat to fighters, cruisers and even corvettes. However, its relatively light armament is believed to render it vulnerable to larger warships.”

Additional Notes: It looks too small in the tech database (its closeup value should look like this: “$Closeup_pos:           0.0, 0.0, -4500”) and it needs to have its score increased from 0 to 10000 (the same value as a Shivan juggernaut which has the same hit points as an SI Arachnas).
------------------------

Here's hoping that people like these descriptions enough to use them.

EDIT: I did a little more fiddling with the text (updated as of 3:30am EST Jan 17, 2002) so it is current now.

If youve taken all of these from the TBL file from the IW Demo campaign then bewarned one or two changes to this have been made to fit them all togther in the campiagn, so not are all as they should be.

D'OH! Well, I tried. I guess these MODs won't be having uniform tech descriptions, after all.

Hey, that looks very good!

Actually, if you have the time, I have several bits from my campaign missions and tables that I would like you to look over for grammar issues. Let me know if you are interested.

Great; you can download this and extract the missions using VPView to look over the text. This is basically an early build of the campaign containg seven missions and the necessary mods, so they should load up fine in FRED2.

CP, I've just taken a look at mission 1 of the Procyon Insurgency. For a campaign that I haven't edited yet, it looks AWESOME! (You always did make quality work, CP!   ) However, I do have some suggestions to make and there were a few grammar errors. How do you want me to correct them? Should I post the stuff at FRED Zone or to you want me to e-mail everything to you?

(Don't forget that I made the GTVA Fleet Organization chart at FRED Zone; I think that will be useful in this campaign. I also noticed that you created a "15th Vasudan Battle Group"; we need to discuss that in greater detail via e-mail.)

Concerning the GVI Abydos Installation, I just want to offer my humble opinion on this: I think the GVI Cairo would work better. Yeah, the Abydos does work well as a Vasudan installation in a pinch, but it's only a re-skinned Arcadia. Terran and Vasudan designs don't look at all the same (they use WAY different designing principles) so the Abydos didn't really impress me. (Apologies to the designer of the Abydos; I know you worked hard on it and it DID fulfil a demand for a Vasudan installation MOD until Bobboau's GVI Cairo came along.)

My suggestion is this: instead of using the Abydos, use the Cairo in its place instead. The Cairo looks way cooler (IMHO) and it does seem like something the Vasudans would design (more curvy like Vasudan designs and NOT blocky like terran designs).

Your thoughts, CP?

Su-tehp, that is easily the most arrogant thing I have ever seen on a web board. I salute you!

I know you didn't mean it that way, but it just grabbed me and made me laugh. From now on, I'm going to preface all my comments on models and renders with, 'For an X not modelled by ME...'

D'OH! I REALLY didn't mean it that way, but I was talking only to CP when I said that (I know, I know, this is a public board, but I was only thinking of speaking to CP when I wrote this).

CP has seen my editing work on FRED Zone, so he knows how well I edit. Besides, after seeing a great deal of chaff alongside a lot less wheat in player-made campaigns, I couldn't help but say this!

CP, one more thing: I noticed you created star system briefing icons! Dude, that is SWEET work! I have a question, can you do the same thing for the GVI Cairo and the SI Arachnas installations? If we could update those MODs with new icons, that would rock a$$!

Glad you liked the campaign so far.

I was actually also thinking about replacing the Abydos with the Cairo. The only reason I have not already done so is that I have used the Abydos in mission six of the campaign and play-balanced the mission accordingly, so it would take some work to put in the Cairo instead. Still, the mission is currently a bit too short for my tastes, making further balancing necessary, and the Cairo is a very nice model anyway, so I will probably use it. I will need to modify its table data quite a bit but it should be fine otherwise. Does this tech description look okay? (same thing as yours with a few small changes)

The GVI Cairo installation is comparable to the Arcadia and, like its Terran counterpart, serves as a central headquarters for the coordination of military forces. The most prominent difference between the two is that the Cairo has far more potent anti-warship beam weaponry. Though slightly smaller than an Arcadia, the Cairo packs a more powerful punch with its 26 turrets, which include five large beam cannons. Its design is oriented more towards capital ship defense than the repelling of bombers, but the Cairo makes up for this with its expansive hangar bay that can accommodate up to 30 fighter and bomber wings.

Of course, Bobboau will get credit for the model.

Regarding the icons, I actually did not design that planet icon at all. This image was originally in FS1 but was removed in FS2, so I just changed around the animation a bit (to make it FS2-compatible) and added it in. I decided to give the Cairo icon a shot anyway though and am fairly satisfied with the results, so I will add that in with the next version.

As for that little remark, Su-tehp may seem a tad arrogant at times, but he certainly has got something to be arrogant about.

Cool, I can't wait to see the campaign in full! I've gotten to about mission 4 of the demo so far. My God, CP, what the HELL did you do to those cruiser flak turrets??? Those things rip me to shreds in 3 seconds flat every time I try to get close! (I had to relearn taking out cruisers at long range with Maxims again!)

I'm wondering if you can also create a briefing icon for the SI Arachnas as well. I think Bobboau created that MOD; he might appreciate this new icon. I have the zip file containing the Arachnas, so I'll send it to you later today.

Also, I'll put your Cairo description in my tbl file and see if it fits in the 480X600 res (I think it will).

I didn't know I came off as just a tad arrogant, CP!

EDIT: I just sent off the zipfile to you, CP. Hope you find it useful.

LOL, actually I only made very minor changes to the flak turrets (just changed around the firing sounds and explosion graphics); many of the cruisers have a long range anti-fighter laser turret, which might have been the thing that was hurting you a lot. Also, I turned up the AI on the enemy ships a bit and certain classes of ships fire faster than others, so that might have made it a bit harder to survive. I changed around many of the armaments of the various ships though; you may have noticed that when playing the missions.

Just got your email; checking the zipfile out now.

I'm also wondering if we (and by "we", I mean "you"   ) could make an icon for the GTI Acheron, Robin Varley's MOD of that small installation/gun platform. It's definitely a high quality MOD that deserves its own icon as well as the GVI Cairo and SI Arachnas.

I only wish I knew how to contect all these MODders; some of their e-mail addys are outdated.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. Whoah! CP, take a look at sandwich's website! It has an FS2 ship list just about as good as yours (MAYBE better)!

Also, he made some kind of space system background list on several FRED missions.

Sandwich, if you don't mind, I'd like to post this stuff on FRED Zone in out guidelines forum. You'll be creditied with it, of course.   Do you have any objections to this?

Of course not, dude - that's what I made all that for. Gimme a link to the site and I may even hop over someday.

That background list is taken directly from the Volition missions, copy-pasted the whole text of the background section into blank mission templates. It was while I did that that I built up the discrepancy list - that brought about some interesting revelations.

Thanks, guys. CP, I (think I) told you a while ago - get in touch with me on ICQ or something and we can combine forces.

The reason my list doesn't include multiplayer ships is simple - I never played multiplayer.

The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

New description write-ups for some MODs
Sure, we can meet on ICQ sometime about this (#71098511); maybe we can combine the two lists to have one which looks neat and organized, and also has all of the ships.

New description write-ups for some MODs
To get back onto topic: Is there any way we can update the HLP MOD downloads with my descriptions? I guess I'll have to get to work making a new zipfile containing everything needed (including a new tbl file) for the above MODs...

Also, GalacticEmperor raised an interesting point: he suggests trying to create a sort of central site containing all FS MODs in one place. His thread on the HLP forum is here:

Anyone have any suggestions about this?
