Meh, graphics are good but not revolutionary...and for some reason, I get the lowest (poly) LOD when I'm zoomed right up close on fighters and corvettes. The Mothership and Resource Collectors seems ok...

Tons of mirrors can be found here, including ones far better (I assume from past experience) than the one posted above.

So how does it play? How is the new interface? How does contruction and research compare with the original game?

I played a skrimish against the AI, still haven't tried out the single or multi player portions. The game balance is pretty good. I was disapointed that you couldn't build any capital ships other than a Carrier. I hope its not like this in the ful game, cause I wanna see big destroyers and battleships going at it. The backgrounds are nice, pretty stylized though they're bright and "epic". The game feels very much like Homeworld 1 with updated graphics. The gameplay mechanics are almost exactly the same. The ship classes are pretty much the same as in HW, though there is a bit of a twist, in that you have to build a platform for each type (frigate, corvette, fighter etc) of ship. The graphics do the job nicely, though they're not "Wow, thats so cool." Its a bit worse than EVE, I think, though its hard to guess since the styles are different.

I'll post some more later when I've played the SP and MP sections.

I'm going to disagree with you on a few points since I began with the singleplayer game and tutorials as opposed to a skirmish. I can see how you have this type of first impression by trying the skirmish mode first.

The graphics are very impressive when the detail is cranked up as you really get a good sense of scale and the various special effects are very well done. Also, you're not taken out of the action ever and the pacing is much better.

The basic gameplay mechanics seem the same (the rock papper scissors of hard counters), but it seems better balanced then Homeworld 1 where units would become obsolete, each unit has its own strengths even when newer ones are available.

It overall seems like the best parts of Cataclysm were adopted in how you can upgrade the mothership with various devices. So you can have additional firepower at the cost of perhaps not building one of the construction modules, etc.

Resourcing seems to be much better as well since you can salvage debris after a battle. This means you don't have to completely rely on resource rushing. It reminds me quite a bit of Battlezone 1.

The singleplayer mode seems stronger and better balanced.

I'm very impressed so far. From what is shown on the various sites, the full version will be much more impressive with the various capital ships and more upgrades that will allow players to customize their fleets to their liking.

It looks like the upgrade system is loosely based on the ideas in Impossible Creatures. Homeworld 2 is sort of a Frankenstein's monster of their previous games, and it seems to work well.

he didn't say the graphics were bad he said they very very good, but not on par with eve ones. I haven't tried that demo yet, but compairing the shots from the two games, plus the fact I've played eve for a month, I must agree with Rictor. Not that it's a pb to me anyway, I've never been a big fan of HW ( playing a warez version w/o the musics kindda ruins the fun I suppose ).

okay.. i've got mine to work, just remember that HW2 uses OpenGL, so disable the Z buffer, otherwise it won't work...

other than that.. it ran smooth as silk on mine..

Does eve have ships that are 50 times the size of the mothership? Whats the max number of ships on screen at a time in Eve as well?

I was under the impression that some graphical effects were toned down or not added to make the game plyable. i.e ships casting shadows on other ships (its only self casting now which is still great). Also effects that were in the game seem to have been removed like the uber complex explosion effects for the fighters and the much nicer ion trials. That said when there are some big ships thundering around i think the game will be far more "epic" and impressive.

I like the way the smaller ships and fighters seem to die rather fast unlike HW where youd spend half an hour shooting at a frigate, hopefully the limited build number big ships like the battlecruiser will be able to soak up a load of damage to slow the whole thing down.

That said the new found vulnerability in the small and medium units seems to make strike groups useless. The are meant to cut down on micromanagement but they just seem to "clump" your units together and are completely useless for combat. The faster pace of combat seems to mean MORE micromanagement not less which is a bit annoying.

All in all its a very nice graphical improvement over the first game and the storyline is shaping up well, hopefully this will be GOTY material like the first one.

Oh and no Agnus Dei this time :(

Correct me if I'm wrong - but doesn't one "build" of any fighter type mean you get one wing of that type now? Wheras in the original HW you had to build each ship individually...

In that respect, we're talking huge waves of fighters far more easily / rapidly than before - although they can still die against anti-fighter stuff just as easily...
