What they hell does it do? I applied for it, thinking I'd get to choose later if I really wanted to join or not. Now, I'm in it. What the hell is it for and what am I supposed to do?

*is clueless*

I have heard of this too, although don't know much more than the name; as far as I can tell it puts your name on some list of which copies are put up in various classrooms. No idea what it is all for, really.

Here's a more down to earth description I found of it somewhere that actually answers the question.

Quote
The National Honors Society is a service base club, that you must be asked to join and is based on grade point average._

The National Honors Society is involved with a lot of community service, such as visiting nursing homes, Christmas caroling, food drives, and blood drives. _ All the members are involved and each month there is a service that must be completed._

The club meets the second Wednesday of every month._ The meetings run from fifteen minutes to a half an hour long._ The executive board meets first and third Wednesday of each month.

Basically, that's the entire reason for being in NJHS and NHS. By being in them, colleges want you more. They will accept you with lower grades. They will offer you money :p

right, but you've got to have certain grades to get into NHS in the first place. you can't just "apply" if you're sitting with B averages... in our school you have to be 'invitited' to join... which happens only if you have the right grades and/or GPA

3.9 GPA... that's weird, that's on a 4 point scale, whereas we use a 7 point scale in our high school... and i think you have to have at least a 5.5 or a 6 to get invited (or accepted).

i thought mainly colleges/universities used a 4 point GPA scale

They make it sound to important, like you're all the shining examples of everything that is good and rieghteous with society and humanity. Probably need a mean British accent to be accepted, otherwise, yo're not gentlemanly enough.

So basically, its Scouts for nerds. :D :D

Strange Canada doesn't have this. Not that I'de be invited or anything, but I've never heard of this stuff. Its da l33t c0nN3x10n for geting into colleges and universities.

I got accepted with an 83 % total average. And it's not that they're picking the best of the worst, mine's one of the best school's in the US (hard as hell, tho :D).

Anyways, I heard it was mostly fundraising and stuff. I really don't want to do it, as my science grade is in the toilet, my Social Studies is taking a pounding, and my Spanish grade, while not bad, has some serious work to be done to keep it from going down.

I'm currently waiting to see if they remember that I'm a member of our school's NHS.....
