Fs2's death reports have been slightly exagerated.
Don't know how to describe it, can't really define it.

Maybe the words "interesting times" have an interesting sound to them. It makes sense really, doesn't it...

I mean, it has been a good 2-4 months since I saw a "Fs2 is about to die", "Who gives a funk about a 4 year old engine" (The sig you see below is an answer to those claims) and the good old tired and true adage...

"I am getting too old for this", and "My machine won't run SCP, so I 'm out".

Thing is, we are living a renaissance of sorts, a "Golden Era" if you will. I don't want to wait for it to end before aknowledgin  it :nodding: speaking out about it and what I think caused it...

So, without further ado... (If you're left out, don't mean nothing, probably that I didn't remember something important, and that is MY mistake, not yours)

1. Freeware engine (thank -V- gods)
2. Free download (including the missing parts ;7 )
3. TBP v.2 (despite teething problems and progress reports therof)
4. and quite possibly the most important... INFERNO

which brought so many new people over HLP, some of which WILL stay.

Reasons for continued and proposed growth (aka, this WILL NOT fadeout not too soon)...

1. HTL coming on to us
2. WC saga (models look gorgeous, people WILL make campaigns out of them...;7  )
3. Kazan's and other valiant efforts to make the tools_of_the_trade more accessible (and of course you can get Truspace 3.2 for FREE)
4. More and more people coming over, and actually creating stuff.

and last but not least...

The star wars TC. Can't beat the grandaddy, no sir :)

So, sit back and enjoy the ride. It WILL be quite a magnificent experience. If you feel like, contribute. It is good to belong, and after all those times playing same old games, why not be creative?

(All that remains is that in due time I answer my own question)  ;)

If you want to be ready for Wing Commander Saga: The Darkest Dawn, then download and play the prologue first.

Here,

http://www.wcsaga.com/downloads/files/download/releases-prologue-setup-exe.html

Then, while waiting for the Darkest dawn, Download Starshatter 4.02

http://www.starshattermods.com/infusions/pro_download_panel/download.php?did=214

You 'll understand why once you have.

Ummm, congrats on figuring out, what, year, two year-old news?

EDIT: And aren't you a little new to be discussing the ages of Freespace past? I mean, seriously, you just came on board. You haven't even seen the stuff that happened before, sheesh

LOL Well, he's entitled to be pleased at what will hopefully happen in the future, but when I came back onto HLP after a year of not playing FS2, I was breathtaken at what the coders had achieved :)
Anyway, it's been at least 2 months since we had a 'Source Coders Rool!!11shiftone!!111!' post, even if I guess it should be in the SCP one where the coders can see it ;)

Flipside :D

february 2001 was only like 2½ years ago, so he's probably been around here. I see you registered in october that same year...

and now when he mentions it, he's right. hasn't been that much "let's give up, this game is 0ld" talk lately. which is nice.

:D Yeehaw!:D

It would seem that GT registered before you even?

Though registration dates lie... I was on the VBB for almost 2 years, but only joined here when it died, and though GT hadn't, that doesn't mean he doesn't know what he's talking about...

Uknown Target, You are right, I haven't been here to know.

I missed the great flame wars of VBB and the migration over here.
But, I have been here long enough. So, I can only speak from what I have seen.

And that is more "Fs2 is dead" threads than I can count.

Just wanted to get a quick heads up to those who are interested in finding out what 's going on. (There are many new people around). I also feel vindicated in a small way. You should too. You waited out the bad times, and now good times are a-rolling again!

I think I must be blind. I haven't seen a single one :D

EDIT: And kode, you registered in the same year as well. And just because I took forever to register on HLP, doesn't mean I wasn't in FS before that.
Actually, if we're gonna get nostalgic, when I first found HLP, I thought it'd never last. Proved me wrong :D

as long as people play FS2 it wont die. As long as FS2 is the Undisputed champion of space sims people will mod for it. As long as people mod for it, others will source code for it. As long as people source code for it, and make new mods and it is the undisputed champ of space sim games, people will play it.

Nuff' said..

And its good to see more FS is alive threads too.

I lurked around he VBB for a while, but when I finally decided to register, it was too late. I went to f2s from there, registering as Warlock because I didn't know about the original (never played multi, had like a 56k modem back then). And now I'm here.:p

Holy Imperial Gloriano,

How do you define death in a computer game?

I think it is oblivion, when NO-ONE wants it, it doesn't get played, people don't remember it, etc. For example (and regretabbly so, Slave Zero, a REALLY GOOD GAME)

In that sense EVERY game is dead, since it has passed its hi-time and it is awaiting oblivion. Well, it doesn't happen here.

Why?
1. New campaigns.
2. SCP- bringing you more graphics beauty than you can handle.
3. New people coming over.
4. The mere fact that there isn't anything like it. I mean if they make something that can be as good and as easily moddable as Freespace, people may go over there. But, nothing on the horizon to show for.

Death. What is it? In the end we all will die. You, me and the Universe. So will Fs2. But for the foreseeable future, you will be seeing a lot of activity around here for the above reasons. That means that Fs2 is alive. Which is one more reason to appreciate and be thankful for new and better things like HLP 2.0

*thinks back to VBB*  Ah yes, the Great Flame Wars.  And the VBBQ.  And the Dead Frozen Goat of Justice.

I'm considering setting up an EzBoard (free) forum, just so we can relive those happy(?) days of flaming all and sundry (especially when those buggers from an adjacent forum try to invade...)

I remember when I first arrived on the VBBQ. It was quite an experience. I couldn't understand how such a great game could attract such a miserable bad tempered fan base :P. Freespace 2 the game is already dead. On the other hand there is still some interest in the Freespace universe based on the modding community. I guess that will continue as long as people are happy to mod.
Be warned: This site's admins stole 100s of hours of my work. They will do it to you.

Ah yes, the good old VBB. Then it got slightly too hot.....I think I was amongst the last to escape to HLP.

But on topic, I don't view FS2 as anywhere near dead. The engine itself is still pretty sound, although looking a little dated. The SCP is doing a superb job at sprucing the thing up again, so I could easily see a few more years here.
