I've been messing around with this mesh, salvaged out of one of Aldo's model dumps.  It's my first attempt at a Vasudan mesh.

Currently 758 polys
Background: seen just after Chapella, just going into production when Chapella went 'boom!', now a mainstay of Vasudan Navy.

what should I make it: Cruiser or Corvette?

I say, smoosh it back a little (too long and stretched) and make it a cruiser.

Yeah, and itd need a good texturing to make it look Vasudan to me.

Both are needed why not make it at one length for yourself and release the other length to the community :D

Oh and don't be surprised if I later try and steal it for MindGames :D

If it's the Vasudan's main boat it ought to be a corvette. But why not make a smaller, shorter version as a cruiser? Might save money over developing two sperate designs...

It looks to me rather like the GTCa Warlock from Inferno.

As far as I know...there was nothing in FreeSpace named "Chapella" that went boom.  Definately no "Chapella", "Champella" or "Camonella" either.

Sorry...but this struck me in a very peculuar kind of way (that and I'm probably missing sleep somewhere).

It looks like someone's been stretching the Gaia.  Seriously, it looks cool, but it's pretty low-detail IMHO.

IMHo it looks more like a late Terran design than a vasudan one.

The basic setup and form are terranish with vasudan elements (all that smoothness),
"I was going to become a speed dealer. If one stupid fairytale turns out to be total nonsense, what does the young man do? If you answered, “Wake up and face reality,” you don’t remember what it was like being a young man. You just go to the next entry in the catalogue of lies you can use to destroy your life." - John Dolan

I agree, it looks vaguely Terran. It's mainly the fins - Terran fins are 'stuck on', Vasudan fins are molded into the design in a fish-like fashion (reference Sobek).
Other than that, out of pure personal preference, I say make it the Vasudan equivalent of the Aeolus cruiser.

It looks more like a destroyer :p Or, at the very least, a large Frigate.

Possibly, but it wasn't one of the options ^_^
I don't see the fins working for a destroyer-type, anyway. They're too cutesie. Perfect for more small-scale things :)

I was thinking about it being a Vasudan version of the Aeolus, to be fair

It looks low detail because a)the mesh is setup for the old limits, b) a lot of polys are concentrated in certain areas, like the engines, and c) it is heavy trianglated (sp?)

I tried to copy the Sobek fin style for the dorsal fin, but I kinda skimped on the side ones...

DG, thats a good idea, making two versions, one cruiser, the other corvette.....

More comments welcome (particuly from people who make Vasudan ships often!)

Some Vasudan pointers:
  • sweep those fins back rather than the semi-forward protrusion you have right now.  Vasudan ships almost never have anything pointy facing forwards.
  • do something with that gap around the front; that's a terran trademark as it stands, so it looks pretty out of place on a vasudan ship
  • Turn the engines into one flat block; they're covered over 90% of the time anyway.  Use the polys to add detail elsewhere.
  • pull the top fin back too, so that it hangs over the engines
  • widen the front and narrow the back so they are closer to equal.  They don't have to be the same width, but some variety in width across the length of the ship would be most helpful.

That's all I can think of.  When you ask for comments from "people who make Vasudan ships often" then you're out of luck, it's a known fact that almost no one makes them these days.

Cruiser. The Vasudans need another decent Cruiser. The Terrans have three that can be classed as decent (Though the Fenris just barely qualifies) But the Vasudans have only the Mentu (The Aten was pure Poo, even in FS1).

Hmm, I like it! But it does seem a little more Terran than Vasudan...
