300 pixels per inch!!!! Wow!

:eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

That means that a 1280x1024 (or 1280x960 for you purists) screen would be a mere 4.3"x3.4" / 10.8x8.6cm (4.3"x3.2" / 10.8x8.1cm with the 1280x960).

For comparison, most computer screens nowadays are somewhere between 60-100 ppi.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

300 pixels per inch!!!! Wow!
That's remarkable! :eek2: Gee, you could make those things into digital photo albums with that kind of resolution. Stick one in your wallet. :)

Oh, and while we're on ridiculously small cool things: the Sony DSC-T1. 5 megapixels, 3x optical zoom... and it's the size of a credit-card, 9cm across (2cm deep). Damn...

And check out the size of the LCD...

Wow, I wouldn't mind one of them! Imagine the detail you could suddenly have on a 19 inch flatscreen with that tech!

Thunder - yeah, a 19 inch flatscreen with one of those:
"Hey, where's my start button? ~fetches magnifying glass~"
Nah, the only flatscreen I've got is obviously superior - it's on a very old laptop, 800x600 at 11.6 inches :p It'd seriously hurt my eyes otherwise.

For the near-to-mid term, this technology is mostly going to be useful for VR equipment. Imagine having the equivalent of a 21-inch hi-res display floating in front of you.

There seems to be a misconception among, well, everyone so far, that letters will continue to remain 1 pixel thick, interface elements will be remain similarly small... If this were going to be the case, then we'd also be seeing books with text printed in the smallest possible font size.

For those of you who have seen a Sony Clie, think about the pixels per inch that screen has. It's pretty high, and if they had regular-sized monitors with that ppi, you can rest assured that there will be new "hi-res" or "rich" interfaces coming out in furute OSes.

I still think it's easier to just make the screen bigger for more resolution :p Looks better too.

No, you're not getting it... with 300ppi, text on a regular-sized monitor could look as good as a printed page out of a book.

Now that's what I'm talking about!
