Favourite sci-fi series or movie, and why?

I've just been Stargate-crazy these past few weeks (maybe because I'm waiting to find out more about Anubis, his supersoldier, and the whole Atlantis spin-off), so I'm going to say SG-1. Because: I can believe it; the SGC uses technology they find and aren't in the whole "new episode, everything is wiped clean" grain; and because it has some great tongue-in-cheek moments. ;) Like:

Babylon 5, perhaps not as consistently funny as SG-1 but the story is a real rollercoaster ride and the effects are top-notch. Great stuff.

Gotta be Star Wars, with SG - 1 A ridiculously close second. Now that I've shot down Ties in an X Wing, I sooooo want to kill some Death Gliders in an X - 302. :D

Series: Invader Zim. Excellent series, and interesting idea. Babylon 5 is on a second position.

Movie: Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back. It may not be totally great, but it is good, and I can't recall anything better. The fact that I never saw any B5 movie do not help.

Stargate rules, it's definately up there.

Andromeda is pretty cool too, but in a different way (and I've only watched the first two seasons, so I didn't see any of the allegedly crappy episodes of seasons three and four). The way space combat is portrayed is really good, they actually put their tech to good use (extreme long ranges and high speeds, kinetic strikes, etc.) and the continuity up to the point I watched is fairly good. The scene on the first ep of season two with the mechs on the Andromeda's hull killing the swarmships was a classic.

As for books, Honor Harrington is pretty fun if you want some mindless missile massacres, but it's getting a bit too repetitive on the latest books. Hyperion is very good, and fun as well as thought provoking - but the Endymion books somewhat ruined the whole story for me.

Kevin Sorbo? As in Hercules?

I wish B5 would screen here (at reasonable times :p), so I can enjoy and compare it. ;)

Babylon 5 - The next best thing since sliced bread (and consequently our last best hope for victory). Nothing I´ve seen on TV comes as close to being almost literature than B5. Character developement - top notch, very stage-like dialogue, which I like (yeah, people say it´s unrealistical, but so what. So is Oedipus Rex), ****ing great space battles,

and the only scenes in TV and Movie history that have made me cry (!). And remember that I can watch Braindead while eating pudding, natch. I am of course referring to two episodes in particular (SiL and The Fall of Centauri Prime).

Oh, did I mention some truly great actors (Peter Jurasik, Andreas Katsulas, Michael O´Hare, Patricia Tallmann, Jeff Conaway, Wayne Alexander, Ed Wasser, Brad Dourif (who starred in Lord Of the Rings), John Schuck, Marjorie Monaghan, Ardwight Chamberlain (a cookie to whoever can guess who he played), John McGill (who I have liked since MacGyver), Efraim Zimbalist Jr., Mark Schneider, just to name a few).

And then there´s JMS.

Oh, and The Long Twilight Struggle, Comes The Inquisitor, the Coming Of Shadows, The Fall of Night, and about a dozen other episodes contain the best dramatic scenes in TV and cinema. Find me one person (with at least a slight literary background) who doesn´t enjoy COS, and he gets a boxfull of cookies
