some targeting eyecandy ideas I just had
I just had a couple of ideas for some things on your currently targeted ship,
specificly I was thinking it would be cool to have a lit outline around your targeted ship, similar to the outline you would get in a cell shaded render, but white or red or green or something

the other idea was to have a reticle model rendered around the ship, something like the jump node, it wouldn't rotate with the ship but maybe rotate or scale on it's own or relitive to your ship

I wanted to know what people though of these ideas before I implemented them (and I'm not gonna for about two months the earliest) so that they wouldn't irritate anyone

just for cosmetic looks wouldnt hurt too much, i think visually it might not be worth wild, but that one enhancement could lead to others that might be beneficial, so i sez go for it.

hmmm thinking about this it might detract from original gameplay... the outline might make the ship look ugly and would distract the player....

sorta like an upgrade of what we have now? Instead of the brackets we would have the option of like a kewl lookin "jump node"? sure why not, just as long as it can be modded or completely turned off (revert back to the original brackets).

Why not? May as well give it a go. If it's no good, just turn it off/revert back to the original.

like when you scrape your knee and it hurts real bad you wanna cry but you don't want people to see you cry so you bite your lip and hope your mommy comes soon because if someone sees you cry the'll laugh at you and if they laugh you'll probably get mad and start to cry more? STOP LOOKING AT ME!!

Err, anyway.  I say do the jumpnode targetting thingy around ships ONLY if it absolutely takes no memory or processing time away from the game.

I like both ideas, Bob, especially the faerie-fire one. Are you considering scaling the outline with the distance between the player and the target? I'd recommend, after the distance reaches a certain threshold (scaled outline or not) that the target become a simple circle of constant size. This faerie-fire/outline idea appeals to me.
[sidenote]what if there was a weapon effect that added the faerie fire to a ship, making stealth/cloaking ships targetable/visible?[/sidenote]

The 3d bracket idea might be a bit overwhelming, I think. This is a fine line though, and is probably a matter of what the targetting effect consists of.

I think the first one would detract away from the enhancements to the graphics, and would look really odd on CapShips. The second one is a nicer idea, but I think it would need to be seen in-game :)

Use the faerie fire on the smallest capships (corvettes and PT boats, in real navy parlance) and fighters.

You could use floating subsystem identification flags in a 3d hud element or something for the capships, but that's just me being insane. :D

My question for the outline idea:

When you target a larger ship, say a Ravana, and you're targeting some subsystem, would the whole ship still be outlined withe the subsystem outlined in another color?
Could colors be setup in the HUD menu?
Also with the Targeting reticule on the ship (or for lack of a better term, the mini-jump node) if you targeted a Cap Ship would this thing take up your whole screen?  If you targeted a subsystem, would it just hover on/in/around that subsystem?
