Older games and win xp
I just bought the origional Aliens vs Predator and of course it runs really slow on Windows Xp. The compatability mode has no effect. This is not the only game it does this to. It does this with Descent 1 and 2, Dark Forces, Rise of The Triad and some other older games. And some don't work at all. Thoughts and or solutions?

you've applied the latest patch and all that, right?

I wish I could get ROTT working :( people forgot to bring my secondary computers when they visited me last time, so I'm stuck in nostalgia and no way to play the old games.

For DOS games use VDMS.

If you have VESA problems, hit immediately alt-enter - if that doesn't work use NOLFB, if the mouse's stuck use MOUSE2KV.

That's my 2 cents as a start.

If it runs slow it could be some sort of problem with the built in winXP 16-bit support.

Shutdown any other program running in the background - go to Taskmannagger and check the tasks, not applications.
Kill everything other than explorer - it won't let you do so with system apps, so it should free up resources.
Kill your net connection too.

use linux.

or, if you have a FAT drive, make a DOS boot floppy, and use that.

yeah, cuz I know **** about *nix. I'm getting brain damage from using solaris, as I write ls instead of dir when I use cmd at home nowadays. it doesn't work...

and I have NTFS, and letting anything other than NT systems even touch an NTFS drive is playing russian roulette with a reformat if you fail, so even if I got knoppix, which I won't, how would I get to play ROTT, and can you guarantee that it works?

I just need my secondaries...

XP can run dos games? Does the sound work?

I am using ME and actually get the opposite problem in many games. The original Descent runs way too fast to be playable (the rate at which your ship bobs up and down makes it look like an earthquake), although the D1_3dfx version works very nicely. ROTT and Dark Forces also run at insane speeds. Doom 1/2, Duke Nukem 2, Raptor, Skyroads and some others work fine though. Descent 2 is okay but I have to put in on the maximum resolution and turn off the cockpit to slow it down enough to be playable, or else it is like D1. The main problem is that I haven't been able to get any of the SBLive's SB16 emulation to work since I upgraded the motherboard, so there is no sound in most of the games.

You can get a program to temporarily slow down your processor for those. CPU-kill or something like that, look it up on HOTU. Don't imagine it can be good for your computer, but hey...

Duh....

Stryke all it does it makes the processor execute a bunch of blank commands between actually doing any work for the program itself.

BTW CP:
Yes it can, but you need the VDMS to get any sound - that's an emulator however.
So it will work with any soundcard, but will use CPU power - not that it's a big resource hog with games created for 386.
I can run a wide range of programs using it.

The bad use: it can run on NT based OS only.

What platform was it written for?
What did you try to run it?

  • Already told you people too much!
I had the same problem for freespace 2. It wouldn't play on windows xp. Believe me I tried everything. So I took to my nearest computer repair and droped it of there. They told me that there was a volition or Interplay code for some of there games and some xp versions code not read it. Believe me take it to the nearest repair shop and they'll delete it. Its your best option, It turned out to be the one of the happiest days of my life!:D

yeah?  so FS1 and FS2 will work on XP?  Interesting... then maybe i won't have to do a dual 98SE and XPPro boot... maybe i can just get away with XP Pro, and have an emulator for older DOS games

FS1 and FS2 work *perfectly* on XP without any ****ing around. I honestly have no idea what jdjtcagle is on about, I've never had any trouble installing and running FS1 or 2 on WinXP.

edit: And ROTT *has* been ported to Linux, it's on icculus.org:

http://www.icculus.org/rott/

There's even a Win32 port there somewhere apparently.

Even the topic of this thread, Aliens vs Predator, has a Linux port in the works:
