Unless my fs knowlage escaped my brain(god forbid) theres is no such thing as freespace darkness rising or a unreleased fs game. Yet http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3062511972&category=11047

It's the FS2 OEM pack isn't it? You get the first act, getting kicked out before the Vasudan missions start.

I got bit by this buying Conflict:FreeSpace. Thought I was getting the whole deal only to get booted out after the Taranis mission :blah:

I own...

Conflict: Freespace - works fine, I can play the whole campaign

It's just the name. Conflict: Freespace is actually the same thing as Descent: Freespace is

No it's not. My Conflict: FreeSpace is the short OEM version. Descent: FreeSpace is the actual full game

Conflict:Freespace is the european/german name for Descent:Freespace. Feck if I know why they changed that.

Now why is Freespace 1 officially called Descent Freespace: The Great War, and FS2 called Freespace 2 without the Descent part? I specualte that FS1 was intented to continue to Descent saga but FS2 went too far off on a limb to really bear the Descent name... just my speculation, whats the truth?

The truth is there were legal issues with the name.

FS1 was suposedly the space variation... It was origonally going to be called Descent: Spacesomethingorother... Before FS2 came out, they decided to drop the descent part since it didn't fall in line with the descent series...

Thats where it is... Darkness Rising is packaged with the old computers, sortof like my FS2 says "Packages software. Not to be sold seperately." FS1 couldn't patch, and my FS2 lacked the GOTY stuff, since it came out before the goty version...

  • I'm a magic man, I've got magic hands.
My darkness Rising went up to the Taranis and came with my old Gravis Blackhawk joystick. Man those were the good old days, I actually thought that was the end of freespace and didn't realise until I got FS2 and they were talking about a Lucifer that I had missed anything. :D

OK, last time I'll post in this argument cos it's pretty pointless.

I've just looked at my CDs, to make double sure. Descent: FreeSpace is FS1, in the cardboard wallet with the two discs. Conflict: FreeSpace is a single disc in a white-backed jewel case and is the OEM 'software bundle' version, with only the first third of the game. Thank you and goodnight.

FS1 was prefaced with Descent because there was already a Disk Cleaning utility with the copyrighted name "Freespace". Since there was no disk cleaning "Freespace 2", V dropped the Descent from the sequel. Dunno why it became conflict Freespace in the UK though. Another interesting naming tidbit the name "Freespace" actually comes from what Adam Pletcher originally decided Subspace was going to be called.

The real deal from the horses mouth - The Descent titles did not go down to well in places like the UK (maybe not in viewpoints, but definitely in sales figures), and thus, the name "Descent" was changed to Conflict for the purpose of not misleading the public to believe this was a Descent title.  Conflict Freespace is the official name for the European release of FS1. Anyone wanna add? :P
