Fair warning.... I recently decided to fully update my copy of W2K, largely to try and stop that blaster thing should I foget to start me firewall.  Anyways, I accepted all the recommended updates, including to IE6.  As a result, the browser is completely ****ed up, and is unable to open a new window (i.e. clicking on a link or desktop shortcut), or run alongside outlook express.  Plus my entire Pc seems to be running substantially slower.

And I'm monumentally pissed off.

Well, my scanner (the free AVG one)  & firewall is completely up to date, and I've scanned everything, so i doubt it.

Very strange.  How long since your last reinstall?
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

Whoever runs Microsofts suggested 'updates' needs to be shot.

Have fun with your own bit of Microsoft home-made spyware (could also be called crashware, but it's amazingly stable when trying to find the microsoft homepage to send all your data) ;7

Support: Did you get the patch?
Tard: What patch?
Support: The patch MS released months ago to fix the vulnerability Blaster exploits
Tard: Oh no, a friend who is like, really knowledgable with PCs and stuff told me that all MS updates are spyware so I didn't bother

Tard: Hello Microsoft support how can we help you?
User: Hi I just installed your patch, I assumed it would work as I paid an appreciable amount for your software that wasn't exactly right in the first place.
Tard: Due to the nature of these patches we cannot guarantee that they will work.
User: Why? Surely with the amount of money you make you should be able to release something that works? Hasn't something accidently slipped through that was bug free?
Tard: *with an air of sarcasm* Have you ever tried to make money? You must realise that if we do not release flawed software that we cannot force you to upgrade and thus protect your rights by enforcing wholly unfair restrictions on how you utilise our product.
User: Why are you not answering any of my questions?
Tard: *with an air of 'he's on to me'* *hangs up*

That's optimistic.

This is the second time win2k has fecked up on me for no appreciable reason - the last time was because I installed a freeserve connection program.

You mean never? :p
Science alone of all the subjects contains within itself the lesson of the danger of belief in the infallibility of the greatest teachers in the preceding generation . . .Learn from science that you must doubt the experts. As a matter of fact, I can also define science another way: Science is the belief in the ignorance of experts. - Richard Feynman

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill
