Link was 10 and 17 in Ocarina. In the manual for Link to the Past he was depicted at about 15 or so, but that's the illustrator's impression and not Shigsy's vision

IIRC the original Zelda 1 manual said that Link was 10 yrs old.

I would love to have every single zelda game again and play them all from the first to the last.  I wondered if the story line actually kept up.

A while back NGC magazine attempted to put every Zelda game ever in to chronological order. They had to bodge a lot of it, since mostly Zelda games are re-tellings of the legend. Now, however, we seem to have a definte continuity going. Ocarina was the very first episode in the legend, followed by Majora.
Spoiler:
Windwaker is set hundreds of years after Ocarina, and makes references to the Hero of Time, so we can assume the preceedings of Ocarina or now 'official'.

It is theorised that Link to the Past and Link's Awakening are set somewhere in between. Certainly LTTP's history contains many elements similar to Ocarina - the Hylian knights protecting the sages as they sealed away Ganondorf, for example. But to be honest trying to shoehorn those episodes in to the current chronology is unnecessary fanboyism.

In any case, I fully expect new Zelda games (should in theory be a Wind Waker sequel on GC) to conform to the history laid down in Ocarina and Wind Waker (Majora doesn't really count since it tok place in an alternative universe and didn't really afffect Hyrule). Here;s hoping the next one will have more of an overworld to it [/color]

Link's Awakening is pretty good, but suffers from having only two buttons to bind with items. If you're going to buy it look out for the DX/colour version. Tis set after Link to the Past.

The two Orcale games were superb examples of Zeldarage - and they weren't even made by Nintendo. Again they suffer from only having two action buttons but that's the very worst flaw in the game. They're set after Ocarina, though I couldn't comment on their relationship to Majora. Good as they are, I did get mighty annoyed with them - I played through one and transfered my character to the other pak to continue the quest, and got to the final boss at which point my game got wiped. Damn and blast.

I like the split-timeline theory, that there are two timelines: One is derived from the young Link period of OoT, and one from the adult Link period. I believe that TWW would fall under the adult Link future, whereas most of the rest would fall under the child Link future, IIRC.

That's the whole point. It's like being trapped inside one of Shigsy's ether-induced nightmares

Yeah, I never understood how a game targeted more at younger kids than its predecessor (so many random and comic attributes) had so much to do with death.  I mean, you deal with ghosts all through the game and you are actually there when one character dies at your feet.  Not to mention the whole end-of-the-world thing...

Strat, I think you've falled prey to a common misconception: Zelda isn't  targetted at younger kids. Heck, it wasn't targetted at younger kids when it first came out years and years ago. Just because the protagonist is young doesn't mean its a game just for younger kids. Japanese stories, be they manga, anime or video games, often feature kids as superheroic. In part, this comes from the idea that innocence and spiritual strength are somehow directly related.
