can anyone give me some good bios settings for an N-force2 a7n8x asus MB, every time I mess with the Bios it just seems to get worse, I'd like to no longer have my CPU running at about half speed

That's the same model I have; the clock multipliers seem to work correctly on the default "auto" setting.

On a side note, do you get lockups when restarting the computer through software (i.e. without using the power button)? I remember seeing something about this motherboard having trouble there and get this problem all the time.

I get that on rare occasion, the problem is I was haveing major reebot/freeze problems, I was thinking it might be a hardware issue, turns out a reformat/reinstall did the trick, but now I'm stuck with a athlon XP 3000+ running at 1.29 Ghz, so I want to know how to set what settings to get what results, I don't want to fiddle with my BIOS blind anymore

Not specific to any particular mobo. My suggestion:
- Flash the BIOS to latest version.
- Load failsafe defaults or optimized defaults.
- Get latest chipset drivers for your OS.

I got that mobo. It's given me grief since the day I got it. It won't let me use the game port on my sound card (Creative's tech support gave up) and frequently my USB stick and (less frequently) mouse just stop working and have to be unplugged and replugged. Most annoying, especially during the middle of a flight sim.

Getting back to the topi, though, the clock multipliers are all FUBAR. The highest setting is something like 12.5. Higher numbers appear lower on the list, preceeded by a lower setting and a slash. When I try to use the higher numbers it runs at the lower setting. Makes no ****ing sense at all.

On a side note I got that board cos you HLPites told me how much better NF2 chipsets were. Wish I'd stuck with the Via version I had before, that one worked perfectly

I have an aBit NF2 motherboard.  Works fine for me.  

I have the bios settings handy, if it's any use - based on my last mpotherboard, most of the BIOS settings are pretty common between manufacturers.

EDIt - have you tried enabling Quick POST?  My PC won't but up unless I do that for some reason...either misdetects RAM or downclocks the CPU to a 1500+.

That would be because you have a J**** stepping, as opposed to an A**** stepping. J steppings allow you to go up to 12.5, while A steppings have a 13 as the minimum. Everything up to the 2000+ is J, everthing beyond, IIRC, is A.

On a side note, I preferred the VIA-based MSI board I used to have over the nVidia-based Soltek board I have now. For me, though, it's just that I preferred the AMI BIOS to the Award BIOS.

DG. I reccomend posting on the NForcers Forum (or at least searching their Asus forum) I definately recall seeing your gameport problem posted and solved on there.

I have the Deluxe version and although I had some teething troubles with it it's been nice to me ever since.

Well I found two supposed work arounds - one for 98 and one for actually getting the on-board port to work, which I never had a problem with. I just don't have a connector for it. I wouldn't mind using the USB adaptor for the stick at all if it behaved itself.

DG, you understood what I said about the clock multipliers, right? As a side note, when overclocking with decent ram, a lower clock multiplier and a higher FSB is actually preferrable, as you'll get better performance with the same clock speed.

Er... to be honest, no, I didn't understand you at all. all I know is that the Via version of the board I had before (the one I spilt a pint of water on) let me overclock pretty much as high as I liked. This one only lets me ramp the CPU up to a paltry 1.66

You cannot physically raise your clock multiplier beyond 12.5x because of the processor. You can raise your FSB to overclock if you want to go past 1.66, but you won't raise your multiplier any higher without using the wire trick or the bridge trick.

Eh? The Via version had the exact same CPU o/c to 2.00, which was a multiplier of something like 16
