Terrestrial Planet Name
If a planet was discovered (say a decade from now by the Terrestrial Planet Finder telescope) and was shown to be able to support life, what would you like it to be named?

eg.

God Names: Apollo, Prometheus, etc
Geographical Names: New Australis, New Mesopotamia, etc
Classical Names: Terra Nova, Earth 2, etc
Biblical Names: Eden, etc
Legendary Names: Hercules, Qin, Atlantis, etc
Pioneer Names: Gagarin, Armstrong, etc
Appearance Names: Shoalhaven, Greenville, etc

I'm interested in your opinion or any other suggestions you may have. Thanks.

Completely unrealated to your main topic, but I checked your FSURP link, and that FSURP is definately true to the nature of the one originally made years ago.

A good list of canon info from the games. Mixed in with info from some of the other lists made (such as ships destroyed in FS1/2, when the techs were available to the player, etc.) it would be a great resource.

It's also good to see the Serkr warhead getting some notice :) (random speculation with no basis: An early Meson bomb prototype?)

As for a new planet, the name will most likely be sold to help pay for the space program. Welcome to planet Halliburton anyone?

Peg! You're back!
*Thought you'd gone for good*

Are you planning on sticking around?

As for the name, it's depend on a lot of things - would the TPF be entirely automated, or require human operators/data interpreters? If the latter, the person who first realized the planet was there'd probably name it. Alternately it'd probably get "##Name of Star## Prime" until a bit more was known about it, and a more suitable name could be chosen.

I'd really like to see a new human world named Armstrong, if only to remember the first man to set foot on a celestial body.  But if we ever get arround to terraforming mars, the name of the first human on Mars would also be nice.

But really, the name of the planet would probably be up to the country(or organization) that found it. I doubt Australia would. ;)

I think there'd probably be a different set of conventions for each system. It's gods for Sol - possibly mythical places? So you'd have Valhalla, Atlantis, Elysium, etc.

why not the name of the person who discovered it?  Isn't it how it is now when a new meteor is found or something?

IF not, then I go for what demon said.

Call it Taros 334 or the like so that NASA scientists can have wet dreams about saying 'Set course for Taros 334, Warp 3'.

It just sounds right :P

in all honesty I think we have a nameing coonvention for this,
name of star-position in system, so if it's the fourth planet in the Vega system it would be called Vega-4

Yes, that's correct :) I'm not sure whether Star Trek got it from Nasa, or vice versa, but I think we are stuck with it now :)

No, it would be Vega IV.

Anyway, I would name it Valhalla.
