I am thinking about buying a DVD burner, what are the do's and don't's? currently, my PC is set up like this

IDE1:
20GB 7200RPM Master (OS's and Swap files)
40GB 4800RPM Slave (MP3's, software, crap)
IDE2:
DVD player
CD Burner

I have about 120 Euro's max to spend, and i want something that can burn both + and - R, RW DVD and CD, all in 8 and 12 centimeter formats. Linux driver suppport is certainly a plus.

What i want to know is:
What brands to avoid.
Which drive should i remove? (i have only 2 external bays)
Does a higher price means a higher quality?

You ought to get rid of the CD burner, imho.

That way you'd have one device capable of reading CD's and DVD's, and one drive capable of reading and writing both formats. Makes copying easier.

Well, I'd say partition off you 40 Gig drive and remove the 20 Gig certainly. As for DVD Burners, higher price can often mean higher flexibility, Disney has really made a complete Dog's arse of things with the regioning of DVD and some recorders won't record in some region formats.
I would suggest an external SCSI drive and a controller to save your Primary Drive, but I doubt 120 Euros would push to that :(

Good point Odyssey, I didn't notice he had a CD Burner :D

i want too keep the two HD's for sure, since i only have two external bays. if i want 3 external drives, i'd need a new case, and i'm not feeling like transfering all my stuff.

and for flexibility: does that regional crap go for data DVD's as well?

I don't know the brand off hand (I think IO Magic) but I bought a DVDRW +/- from best buy CHEAP (like $179.00) and it sucks, it don't work and after I installed it it screwed up my CDR drive also (I had taken out my normal DVD)

I can't afford to re install windows cause of the data I would need to burn, which I can't burn cause I need to reinstall windows to get my CDR working right agin, which I can't cause... (endless loop)

Pioneer is good. Lite-On is teh dog's nadgers, and not unreasonably priced either. Happarently most mixing desks with DVD burners use Lite-On lasers. Oh, and Plextor is good - it's a Lite-On with a betetr warranty or summat

Word to the wise: don't bother with cheap bulk DVD media. Branded stuff is the ticket

The NEC ND2500A seems to have had some fairly good reviews.
