Ok, well I'm currently in the last year of a 2 yr diploma in IT Software Development.

Now I seem to be good at coding, and I don't mind it most of the time. However, I also like the creative side of things.
I don't mind a bit of sketching now and then, and I could probably be happier in a Graphics Design kind of thing. Yet I don't think I'm as good in that area at the moment, but truth be told I don't practice much at all.
I also would love to work designing Interactive Media etc, but this seems a more risky option to take first up.

Seeing as my options next year, are to continue on in another uni course in IT, find something else to study, else get a job or be a bum.

Not really wanting the latter options I'm kind of torn between the few ways I could go.

The reason for this thread is to:
1. Get views on other people in these fields and what its like.
2. Take in a few suggestions from others and where they're going.
3. Maybe even help others in a similar situation.

While I kind of enjoy coding etc, and would probably be easier for me to do, I think it would only serve to deteriorate whats remaining of my creativity.

So in summary (for me)
- Software Design ~ Easier, yet less creative.
- Design Artist ~ Harder, yet probably more fun in the long run.
- Another Option ~ I could picture myself as a Bum... :p

So people, what's your view on career paths and what to do for a living?

You can't "kind of" enjoy coding and expect to continue enjoying it. You either love it or not, and if you don't love it completely don't try to spend ur career doing it because you'll regret it.

Software Design (Engineering?) - Big area, some ppl say the software crisis may be over - they're lying. If you're good at it, lots of money to be made but beware the influx of others like you who may saturate the market.

Design Artist - fun, creative but you gotta be good. are you good enuf?

Other option : Start your own business based on a skill you have like web design or graphic design etc...

  • huh?.. Who?.. hey you kids, git off me lawn!
whichever that you feel more comfortable doing, if i knew i were supposedly "artistically Talented" i woulda chosen a career path more suited to that back in high-school... hindsight always being 20/20 neh?

anywho, make a choice which you won't regret, and feel that you'll get more out of it in say, 10-30 years from now.

do not torment the sleep deprived artist, he may be vicious when cornered,
in case of emergency, administer caffeine to the artist,
he will become docile after that,
and less likely to stab you in the eye with a mechanical pencil

If you're not better than excellent, there's no chances at all.

well I do enjoy coding, but not as much as doing other things.

I have thought long and hard about starting my own business covering all sorts of media. So doing websites / logo designs / even making games. The problem lies what skills do I personally want to specialise in. If I had the time and money, I'd learn how to do everything. Personally, I would rather be a manger / designer. And get others to program for me. But currently when I come up with ideas to code stuff, I lack the skills... my only option would be to find someone to do it for me. But if its a business, starting out with no capital. It would be me and some mates of mine doing alot of the stuff part time, and wouldnt really be able to hire someone to code for me...

I wasn't too bad at science either, wouldnt mind doing a bachelour in science or physics, but again little more difficult but fun also.

So where do you / plan on working vyper?

EDIT:

Yah, the thing is I feel I could go either way. If not an actual artist in the sense of drawing but in the way of designing of webpages, business cards, etc. I know a fair bit about that already seeing as my Dad does that for a living...

probably not for me.

I'd like to be more on the image / colour design of things. Plus I'm thinking more in the way of the GraphicsDesign with coding experience, so do Graphics design as a Hobby and have my Software Dev skills to fall back on.
