OK, trail life set to 1, looks MUCH better, becomes transparent immediately and fades much quicker, fixed it for all of the burners for the ships that have burners (I had missed a couple of shivans) and it does NOT look stupid! nor does it look like homeworld (i confess, it did before), heres some new screenies and will someone please help me upload a .zip

I like the "Homeworld" look. Some of the old Starforce-universe sketches I had made about six years ago (yes, I had the basic foundation of Starforce laid out before FS1, never mind FS2, was released) had trails that looked like that, except wider and with irregular, "fiery" borders. And I have never played HW.

EDIT: Now that I've seen the burners with the life set to 1, that's a bit closer to the actual length. A life of 1.5 to 2 would probably match my drawings. They're still not wide or intense enough, though. They should look like extensions of the exhaust plumes, not trails. After I make them more intense and ALWAYS there even when the AB is off (they're shorter and narrower when there's no AB, and the color is different), and are matched to the engine effects colors, they'll be perfect.

The thrusters release a plume of plasma, not fire. Plasma can be almost any color depending on what material is being put into plasma state.

The only things which appeared odd to me are the LONG trails.

I dislike the trail effects for a simple reason:

Stop burning and you'll have a cut off trail floating through space. That, and it's noticeable its a flat plane, especially when you're behind a ship. :D

Plasma shmasma, we dont need no stinking plasma

The really short trail life fixes the issue, before you can object to the cut off trail -Its Gone!-, I am on FIRE

That should be http://swooh.com/peon/jdjtcagle/Turambar's%20Thrusters.zip

Bah, fire won't propel a 20-ton fighter forward, but a blazing stream of plasma would? Besides, plasma gives you more artistic license with the colors.:p

WARNING: technical nitpick

This is true for a cold plasma such as in neon lighting. However, for an engine or weapon we're much more likely to be talking about temperatures in the thousands or even millions Kelvin. Thermal emission is restricted to the following:

Most energy is IR (heat)
300 K (Kelvin, about 25 deg C, about 78 deg F) - IR, warm
>1000 K (about 700 deg C, about 1400 deg F) starts red - weak
>2000 K - more intense red. UV starts to appear
3000 K - orange-yellow
4000 K - bright yellow
5000 K - white - uniform over visible spectrum
higher T - starts to be blue

Obviously, this is insignificant next to aesthetics, but I do think red, orange, yellow, and blue-white are great engine colors aesthetically. Teal sucks.
