For lack of a better word, i'm calling them "modules"... you know what i mean, its those windows that pop up now and then asking you to install a certain plugin.

for instance:


i ask this, because it's never worried me, but i pressed "enter" (i was on another window, and that popped up, and without noticing i pressed "enter")...  is there any way to view a list of all plugins such as this one installed, or to remove it?  I just formatted two days ago, and i swore that i'd keep the install on this machine clean, with no extra crap (like these spam plugins)... and god knows what spyware it contain(ed).

if it's not from microsoft, macromedia, apple, or the other mainstream companies, don't install it, that's the general rule of thumb i use.

yeah... i'm aware of that... but if you read my post you'll see i pressed enter by mistake, and i think i may have installed it.

it wasn't done intentionally, but now i want to check if i did install it, and if i did, to get rid of it

hmm, it might be in your installed proggies list, the one in the control panel..

or if you have anti-spyware stuff installed, it should pick up on that.

Unfortunately, due to the unsecure nature of ActiveX, this program could be anywhere from "No longer on your system" to "Deeply entrenched and hiding from uninstallation".


AFAIK, there isn't any real way to check.  So you should first see if any new programs are in the uninstall list.  Then you should run spybot and adaware.  Finally you should disable Activex in IE.

HijackThis scans the registry and lists all BHO''s attached to IE plus some other things...

Ans is there a way to uninstall internet explorer itself? It died on me last year, I tried repair install, updating,  installing a new version over it, going back to previous version, nothing works, the damn thing won't run. So vola, I'm stuck on mozilla.

Try this: IE>Tools menu>Internet Options. Click Settings in the Temporary Internet Files bit, then View Objects. That should open an explorer window. On mine it shows a bunch of entries, some named, some only as GUID(?) numbers (the ones in {} brackets). Right-click gives you Update, Remove and Properties options. The properties window has a Codebase entry that hopefully will give you a clue as which one is the one you accidentally installed. That's if you did - if you look at the image you attached, the shading on the "No" button means that pressing enter should be the same as clicking on the button itself. However, I have seen some badly coded dialogs that assumed pressing enter meant Ok/Yes.

@nico: not sure of your IE version, if it's 6 you could try this: http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_reinstall_ie_and_oe_6.htm

edit: apparently you can uninstall IE6 on XP through Add/Remove Programs>Windows Components, but I haven't tried so I can't say it'd work.

If you didn't press tab or anything before hitting return again you didn't install it.  Your screenshot shows why, IE defaults that dialogue to 'no' instead of 'yes' so that people don't inadvertantly install malware.  You should be ok.

yes i thought of that, but at the time i was typing a message to someone in AIM when it popped up, and i didn't notice it had popped up until i pressed "Enter", then looked up at the screen and realized that for a few words of typing i hadn't been typing in the AIM window, i'd been typing on top of this popup thing

so i might have pressed "yes" :-/  probably not, but my typing may have changed the selection
