"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

ATI and nVidia are going head to head in their latest next generation video card release.  This time its the already announced GeForce 6800 up against the ATI Radeon X800Pro.

We've got some of the initial results of the 6800 so now we're waiting to see ATI's offering and see what it does better and what it does worse.  My guess is that they will be rediculously close :)

Nope, the release date of the X800Pro was rumoured to be the 26th but since ATi hasn't actually said anything, it looks like it'll be unveiled on the 5th or 7th of May now. =(

Well its almost 2:00...I'd figure if they were going to make a press release on it...they would have done it by now.  Needs time to get to the newspapers and this is about that time.

So yeah probably not to day....

Why do you figure the 5th or 7th?

Check that.  I mean May 4th

Unless ATi plans to delay even further, there's a good chance this means X800.

May? Darn, I can't wait that long - my dad's coming back a few days after that. Oh well. That much money not saved.

Parts will probably start showing up in mid-to-late May. It'll actually be competing with the 6800 non-ultra, which won't be out until July. The part to face the 6800 Ultra will probably show up in July, also.

Of course, the new slot format should be appearing some time in the middle of this year.  Next year is when they should start appearing in volume.

Its going to drop to around US$100 within the next few months  after ATI has released its PCI-Express card, currently u can get the NVIDIA Geforce 6800 U for US$399 and the NU$299. ATI will certainly have to be competitive.

After reading the specs for the 6800 I'm amazed that its comparable to the top of the line workstation graphics cards, the bandwidth is excellent :D

That's helpful, thanks. ;) I ought to get back in step with the industry, it may be time to buy another computer soon.

It will be way obsolete by the time I can afford it, that's for sure.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Found some interesting information over at the Inquirer. Seems that nVidia may be thinking that the 6800 non-ultra may not cut it against the X800 Pro. If nVidia released a third card in the 6800 line between the 6800 and the 6800 Ultra (a 6800 Pro as the article suggested), that would mean that even though the outcomes of the high-end performance (6800 Ultra and X800 XT) and performance (6800 Pro and X800 Pro) categories would still be up in the air, it would give nVidia a decided advantage in the performance mainstream category (6800 non-ultra with 12 pipelines vs. the X800 non-pro/SE with 8).
