A few planet models I made that use a 2048x2048 texture plus a bump map. The gas giants also have a diffuse effect to get the atmosphere, though I haven't figured out a good way of making a glow effect that would easily translate over to a game engine.

The textures are hand-painted with some elements from NASA photographs. (mainly used in the bump maps for the craters as well as for the overall color palette of each planet)

They're not bad at all ace but they are a little too samey for my liking. They need a few more features (at least on the rocky ones).

They need more...hrm...depth?  Right now they all just look like really pretty balls.

:) yeah, right :) planets with an average diameter between 15000-45000Km and you want depth? you're lucky to catch the sun casting a shadow on mountain ridges on a clear day...:D

I love them, a really good start. If you can start pulling off multi-environment planets they should look even better (a grey moon is fine, but a forest planet with oceans rolling through the edges and a desert around the equator is so much more interesting).

:D nice work there, try giving some of them just a bit more bump for more realism as it needs more bump cause they look to smooth and a little atmosphere, add a bit more  color tones to it to create some depth, like a darker brown for the few shadows that you can see barely or for the holes in the planet., just use a gradient and play with the color's until you like what you see:)

They look quite good. I tried using planet models a few months ago, and it became clear I would prefer using standard 2D images instead.

Those look very nice, can FSCZ use them when they are done?

Perhaps you should add some detail here and there, a little more complicated clouds on the gas giants, and some more prominent features on the moons, like flattened area's, hightened stuff, different shades of grey, etc.
