Something I don't get about Starship Troopers, why don't they just bomb the hell out the planet from orbit?  I mean they certainly must have the technology.

They did/do. But because the Bugs live underground, they need to send the MI in to mop up.

They mention 'glassing the planet' a bunch of times in the book and movie.

That would explain why they are always engaging in what I classify as wasteland.  But what about the radiation?  The MI would be sterile and there would be very few Citizens around.

Did they use nukes? (outside of strategic purposes against plasma bugs, as seen in the film). When you see the arial bombardment scene it looks a lot more like carpet bombing with conventional napalm or something...

Well, the personal launcher system is a nuke, and no doubt they'd not be clear from radiation range ( especially that time when they nuke the bug hole ). As for the carpet bombing, I think it's just a precision attack, I believe they mention orbital strikes at some point. You can't "glass" a whole planet with just bombers.

In the movie, there was that one scene where the terrans had a fleet moving into postition over the planet. They were being blasted out of space by plasma shots. Thats probably why

Yeah, they tried that, and got the heck bombarded out of them while they were still approaching the planet. Besides, the big important bugs hung out in deep underground caves and such (such as the mother bug with the nasty proboscis).

Gas, when we have a problem with bugs, around here anyway, we gas them.  1 or 2 ships equiped for high speed manuvers could get in close and gas the Bug positions using penetrating warheads that get deep before they release their payload.

Bugs can live in vacuum ( at least in Roughnecks ), so I doubt they give a damn about gases.
